ITS TIME FOR SARSOUN AND BASANT

....... BEING A LAHORI! AND AWAY FROM IT, BRINGS NOSTALGIA. BASANT AND LAHORE ARE SYNONYMOUS. FIELDS UPON FIELDS OF 'SARSOUN' ARE GLARING THE EYE, WHILE THE KITES KEEP FLYING THE SKIES. BRILLIANT COLOURS ARE AMASS. THE MAGIC HAS ONCE AGAIN CAST ITS SPELL, ON THE LAHORIS. AS IT HAS, FOR CENTURIES. BASANT NIGHT IN THE OLD LAHORE IS ALMOST MYSTICAL. I WISH PEACE TO ALL THE TROUBLED PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD. IN THE HOPE THAT THEY MAY MIMIC NATURE AND TAKE CUES, WHEN ITS TIME TO RELENT AND CHANGE TO A NEW THEME. THEME..WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY AND A SAFE BASANT.

you're absolutely right Shahzelle. There've been so many tragedies because of the darned strings...I've heard too many stories of young children getting hurt. -:-

The last time I took part in the festivities was in 98. My favorite part...going to one of the vendors for a hot place of chaval and daal. Yeah, there was a bit much garam masala in the daal...but it was still mm mm good :)

My hubby and I visited lahore in 2004 during Basant. It was insanely cool. It's definitely one of the secular, non-patriotic holidays I enjoyed. Everyone hangs out over the rooftops flying kites and trying to cut down their neighbors. I was really surprised to see no brawls start from it. It was all in good fun. Imagine having a kite fight in the projects of New York or say in the countryside of some mid-western state. Cutting each others kites down I'd figure is just enough reason to put a cap in one's a$$.

Ofcourse in Lahore, there is the problem of electrical lines being cut, little boys running after falling kites and dropping from rooftops to catch the kites and having the electricity go off and on throughout the night while everyone's partying on their rooftops. Being there then showed me the true meaning of the "free world". No rules, do what you will...

Well basant is celebrated as Basant Panchmi here in India and later as Holi. I used to play holi has a child lekin stay away frm colors now. Still love abeer n gulaal. Basant brings with it the beautiful Dhaak (Palash) or Fire of the forest flowers. Its an amazing sight...junglon main yaqeenan lagtaa hai kisi ne aag lagaa di hai.
Aap sabb ko bhi basant mubarak.
