In Japan, comic books or ?Manga? are something of an obsession. 40 % of everything published in Japan is in manga form and 85% of manga readers, children and adults alike, read an average of two manga every week. The South Bank Show looks at what is perhaps the world?s richest graphic arts culture ? Manga.
Since the Second World War, Manga has provided the foundation for popular culture in Japan ? not just in publishing but on television, in computer games and advertising. It has also inspired a hugely diverse and rich film animation industry.
The South Bank Show travels to Japan to examine this unique tradition of pictorial storytelling, talking to manga artists and to filmmakers such as Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki, whose work has had a profound influence from Hollywood to Britain.
Inspired by the rich imaginative graphic tales and films that have emerged from Japan, The South Bank Show looks at how the west is finally starting to look east as a world of different imagination and different values brings a new sensibility to western culture. Across the globe ? to Hollywood and now to Britain where Manga is increasingly being seen as British cool and featured in advertising, pop videos and feature films.
This film features Jamie Hewlett, animator for UK virtual band ?The Gorillaz?, who talks about how Japanese animation - specifically the work of Miyazaki has inspired him and his work since he first saw the film Castle in the Sky 20 years ago.
Hollywood is continually looking to Manga as a source of inspiration. The South Bank Show visits Production I. G in Tokyo where the animated sequence was created for Quentin Tarantino?s film Kill Bill. Production I.G is also where cult film Ghost in the Shell was created, providing the Wachowski Brothers with ideas for their smash hit film The Matrix, which has become a cult classic among Manga enthusiasts.
Contributors include: Hayao Miyazaki - Japan and possibly the world?s greatest animation director; Katsuhiro Otomo, manga artist and film director ? famous for Akira; Jamie Hewlett ? animator for virtual band ?The Gorillaz?; Kazuo Koike, author of manga series Lone Wolf and Cub; Junko Mizuno, manga artist; Kiriko Kubo, manga artist; and Paul Gravett, manga expert.

No sorry don't have VCR.. but from what I remember it was quite an alright documentary. I wish they featured more of Miyazaki-sensei though.
And I didn't realise the Gorilaz music vid was gorgeous! Superb animation, but very angsty though.
