Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby

Its the age old debate: Which is U2's best album. For me it comes down to Achtung or The Joshua Tree. From there, it gets hazy. Where Achtung gets ironic and invokes mockery, Joshua Tree is completely solemn and honest U2, perhaps qualities perhaps appropriate for their best album.

I'd say the high's are higher on Joshua Tree, but 1-12, Achtung is great. Seriously, whats the worst song on Achtung? I think this warrants a separate journal.....

This reminds me of this time my friend said he preferred Radiohead's the Bends to OK Computer. While he argued vehemently for the Bends, everyone else agreed on OK Computer. So, he tried to end the conversation by saying, "I guess it's one of those age-old debates, like which is better: Dark Side of the Moon or the Wall." And everyone in unison said, "Dark Side," leaving my friend to shake his head in resigned disgust. I think I laughed for a week.

Wana: I certainly don't fault you for preferring Joshua. I think both albums appeal in differing amounts to the same senses. Each is religious and romantical, just that Joshua is more of the former and Achtung is more of the latter. I guess that's just my reading, but I'm gonna treat it as fact. Anyway, far be it from me to call a beautiful girl ugly just because I like her sister better.

Elusive, Salam. Hopefully, when you reach a certain age, you'll be able to relate to Joshua Tree. The words are amazing. Everything from doubt in religion to finding God, listening to that album is an amazing journey. Then again, you may always prefer Achtung since tastes will differ. Salam.

I'm for that because Achtung is by far my favorite. But I don't think Joshua fans will be pleased. haha

We're ending it after only 28 posts? Seriously, we can't end it like that. Isn't there some way we could objectively decide that Achtung is way better than Joshua? And if not, can we flip a double-headed quarter?

Salam to all. Yes, our debates on which album is U2's best shows that they consistently put out great music, so it is very difficult to decide. U2's songs cover everything from crushes, break ups, faith and religion, politics, love, and many other aspects of life that we can relate to. Ditto on your statement about music getting you through hard times. Like my profile said, music can be a blueprint of experiences that all of us may have undergone in life. Salam :o)

Wanaperfectso: I am such a buffoon! Reading my post and your subsequent one helps remind me that people are coming from different places. Thinking back to Joshua, it deserves far more credit than I gave. Red Hill Mining Town, In God's Country, and the 1st 3-4 songs have definitely gotten me through some rough times. I should say I prefer Achtung, because it's about love and love lost and I love both (love and love lost). I associate each of my crushes with a song (however small the crush is). Over the years, I've associated each of my *significant* crushes with Achtung songs. I think since high school (1996), I've heard one song from Achtung everyday and have probably heard the album on average once a week (at least). So perhaps you can see how important this album is to me. I get really emotional about it.

that's why U2 is so amazing. Because the albums are generally very different in material, they appeal to different people. Whether you like the soul-full "so cruel" or the melodic "if god will send his angels" or the billie holiday inspired "angel of harlem" there's something for everyone. So rather than proclaim an album as the "best," I think it's more important to see the reasons WHY each one of us chooses the one we think is number one. For me, Achtung Baby. it was the last album of theirs i got into because everybody said it was the best. I immersed myself into it a bit late (two years ago), it reminds me of my experiences during my first semester of college :)

Kanizami, Salam. I discovered the Joshua Tree in high school, and it was an all ghetto school. I was probably the only non-black kid in the class. I have also been raised in urban NY almost all of my life. I just love the album, and the meaning behind it. Then again, I respect your opinion since I see that you have passion in your music. Salam :O)

As much as i like Joshua Tree, I'll never ever be able to take seriously anyone that says that's their favorite album or U2's best, mostly because it's such a white-kid-in-frat pick. Achtung is so much more solid and consistent/coherent. You listen to that as 2 halves and it's like a magic carpet ride. You start high and excited while ending low and impotent. That being said, Joshua Tree's solid. But like I say, I've just met so many white folks who want me to think they're super unique for (while in college) having discovered Joshua Tree.

One more thing about why the Joshua Tree is the better album: When Achtung Baby came out in 1991, I was 12-years old; I liked the music (One, Mysterious Ways, Love is Blindness, etc.), but I was not crazed about them since I was into bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, REM and G& R. In 1994, at the age of 15, a friend told me about "Joshua Tree," and let me borrow the album. I was completely mesmorized and amazed by the album. It also signified that great music is abundant in the past, which made me explore bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zepp., Jimmy Hendrix and the Experience, Cream, Neil Young, Tom Petty, and many others. Joshua Tree is the U2 album. Then again, it is just my opinion :oP

Without a doubt, I would choose "Joshua Tree." Although U2 has consistently put out excellent music through out their careers, 1987 and 1988 were there best years. "Achtung Baby" is a great album and a classic, but the lyrics do not hold up to "Joshua Tree." Tracks like "With or Without You," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "In God's Country," "One Tree Hill," and "Exit" covered lyrics about the crossroads of life; basically the whole album was deep. Do not get me wrong, Achtung Baby was great, and ground breaking, but Joshua Tree is at a level by itself.
