Saw the article below on the BBC News website today. Apparently, British Muslims won both the number one and two spots in the Miss Britain pageant recently. And naturally, surprise surprise, fundamentalists were on hand to deliver death threats to them.

The question needs to be asked: What right do they have to get into someone else's business and tell other Muslims how to live their lives? If you don't like beauty pageants, then turn the TV off. No one is forcing anyone to take part.

news.bbc.co.uk

And why is it that they invariably always end up pushing people like the ones mentioned below away from the "community"? I'm willing to bet anyone here that both of the girls mentioned below will probably end up marrying non-Muslims someday. Not a surprise, since the community is hardly making them feel welcome (death threats?).

So long as Muslims keep judging each other and getting into each other's business, instead of realizing that religion is a personal thing, our community will be weak. How can you have a community based on common religion when half of the members always claim that the other half are not "real" Muslims? Note that the most successful and powerful religious-based lobbies in the West are smart enough to realize that judging is best left to God (duh). And so we will continue to lose our brightest, our best, our most successful, and (sniff ... because boy oh boy am I superficial, and not in the least bit ashamed of it) our hottest honies.

I barely use Naseeb anymore but I figured that it would be a good place to post my rant of why the community blows.

History made by UK Muslim model

link

A teenager who fled the Taleban regime has made history by being the first Muslim to represent England in the Miss World beauty contest in China.
Hammasa Kohistani, 18, had been third favourite but Misses Iceland, Mexico and Puerto Rico were voted top three.

Islamic extremists had sent her death threats for taking part in the competition, watched by two billion.

Miss Kohistani, who was born in Uzbekistan, fled Afghanistan with her parents in 1996.

She went to the UK via Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Dubai.

She recalls seeking cover in her Kabul apartment block, as a child, when it came under attack from bombs and bullets.

On arriving in Britain, Miss Kohistani's father Khushal set up a takeaway food business while her mother Layla worked as an interpreter.

Spotted on the London Underground at the age of 14, the A-level student speaks six languages and has modelled for Gap and Superdrug.

She has also been offered a part in a Bollywood film.

Miss Kohistani said: "This is a real life fairy story that couldn't happen in any other country.

"So many people from so many nations have been interested in my progress, because I am not what was expected."

Among those Miss Kohistani beat to the Miss England crown was another Muslim entrant, Sarah Mendly, 23, who was voted Miss Nottingham.

Miss Mendly had been among the favourites but Liverpool's Islamic institute called on her to pull out because contestants are often scantily clad.

A total of 102 contestants are in the Miss World final - now in its 55th year - including Miss Wales Claire Evans, 22, and 23-year-old Miss Scotland Aisling Friel.

Nigeria hosted Miss World three years ago and around 250 people died in riots after a journalist infuriated Muslims by suggesting the Prophet Mohammed might approve of the contest.

On Saturday Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir, Miss Iceland, was crowned Miss World 2005.

The runner-up was Miss Mexico, Dafne Molina Lona, while Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Marie Rivera Santos, came third.

Doesn't God love excellence????

dude honestly?

i hate to be the one to break it to everyone, but when the Prophet saw described the Ummah, he drew a parallel with it and the human body. Even if a single, solitary toenail is infected, the whole body is on alert because of the pain.

beauty pageants are simply not something muslims should participate in. even watching it kills brain cells because it is such a useless and counter productive activity.

now i don't know about the death threats, but

"What right do they have to get into someone else's business and tell other Muslims how to live their lives? If you don't like beauty pageants, then turn the TV off. No one is forcing anyone to take part. "

that bit bugs me. i would hate it if i was doing something wrong and no one stood up and told me to quit it.

maybe the preachy attitude is unacceptable (self-righteousness is so irritating), but i don't think we can disregard it completely.

dawah is an essential part of islam. and we must take the horse to the water, even if we can't make the horse drink it ...

having said all of that, i realize that what was written was simply a "rant".

tuppence of mine that was.

I also think that all the pictures of those stubbly men should be removed from the gallery and replaced with pictures of Hammasa (A) just to put this discussion into some kind of perspective :D

Okay, I know that's not gonna happen, wishful thinking on my part.

Plato: I think we should start with a leaflet campaign. Then after that we should open up a stall in a city centre somewhere (preferably at a train station) and get a petition going?

shaz: its the same mullahs that push for fatwas against people like rushdie, the same ones that TRY (not just talk) to galvanize somethign against the sheer piece of shiteness that the government and military of the states represents. if the muslim world were full of "posh", secluded, well bred, cultured, well travelled "muslims" as both me and you probably are - islam would have probably begun to implode years ago.
in the immoratal words of ms spears ... "why dont you dooo something?" ;)

Ultimately, we will all stand alone before God. And we're adults. To add to the quoting frenzy: 'let there be no compulsion in religion'

Let those without sin cast the first stone

That works for me. As does treat others as you would want to be treated.

True, we don't have an orthodoxy or a hierachy in Islam. And we are all individually accountable. To some extent, religion has always been a means of keeping the 'faithful' together and apart from those outside - that is what our prayers, our food and drink practices etc do - they mark us out as being the same yet different from non-Muslims. But sizeable numbers of Muslims living in non-Muslim lands is where the 'issue' comes in. To a certain extent, we tend to ghettoise ourselves as a community for protection, for kinship, for those familial and geographic ties. And if someone goes outside of this, behaves in a different way, the community reacts in disapproval. You get the feeling that you should or should not do as a herd. And while the Western concept of individualism at the expense of community goes too far I would say that the community concept also goes too far.

When was the last time that any of the self-appointed guardians of the community asked you or I what we think about things like this? I'm sick of a bunch of middle-aged men speaking on my behalf. Men who are entirely disconnected from my generation in all the ways that matter. I also want to say that these people are very quick to say to women that they should cover up, yet when 3 muslim local government officials are caught ballot rigging, they are conspicuously silent. One is as against Islam as the other - yet they have a fixation with sex and see it in all things... Pretty scary really

I don't think I've made any sense at all but hey-ho

Interesting points... Speaking of Kashmir, here's a true miracle: web.mid-day.com

Baba: The Canadian entrant is more shapely, but Hammasa sports the "natural look" better P:

Celes: You joker, you!

mahnoor1: "For once i'd like to hear the Mullahs issue a fatwah against all these filthy rich, oil ladden, artificial island creatin, stuffin their faces until they can't move Islamic Countries for not doing anything about the state of destitution of so many Muslims around the world... or not funding relief efforts... i.e. people freezin up in Kashmir..."

well i think the mullah's shouldn't be the authority for islam. but other than that, i don't know about any other gulf countries - but i know how much saudi arabia does for charity, how they single handedly support palestine financially, i mean we're talking billions go to palestine from the saudi economy - and they've also done alot for all relief funds - it's just that they don't publicize it - they don't make a media attraction of it - they do their part, if not more but they don't shout it out and show the whole world how much they're doing - they've always been very discreet - i can't speak for the other gulf countries, UAE, kuwait, oman, etc.

but u're right - if they should be sending death threats to anyone it should be to them!
