THe Mercury news did a piece on him the day before about his peace through music tour, it was really positive towards him and his religion and culture. I really had a great time in SF :). Aouicah, I appreciate what you teach us about Morrocco and Algeria ALOT. You guys have always been rare or non-existent wherever I lived. I love that part of the world (won't say 'Arab world', out of respect for the many Amazighis inhabiting the area), but yeah..thanx alot :)

well aouichab, didn't Khaled come before Hasni...in the late 1980s.... ); But Rai is gradually picking up in the Mid East... as the arab world becomes more united via satellite dishes etc...

i think that it is almost because of the dialect. its easier for the Oriental singers, Sherky, to be understod in northern Africa than for Rai singers to be undrstood in their language in Sherk...

So why is is popular though in Europe ? Because of the north african immigrants in europe...

By the way, Marseille, south of France, where Zidanes comes from is also called "litle wahran".

why is Rai still not so popular in the Arab world? I have to admit I got introduced to it in Europe and later North America.

yes, khaled is still married with a morroccan girl, and have a daughter named "sahra" which also explains the title of one of his albums.

There is a certain sensibility in the song Rai which we do not find in the other music kinds. Rai means actually, The thought, the word of the people,They express quite their feelings of the life, the love, the hatred, the jalousy, their city, their daily problem,etc...as they touch all the subjects that exist, there were repressions against those singers and censure...
HASNI, which was, for me , the real king of the Rai had been killed by a so-called "religious group"

I was at his concert in SF in 2002 3 years ago but never knew this much about him. Thank you Aouicha and Brainvslove for sharing. Arab artists are very talented and who could best write and sing about the homeland other than Arabs? There is a research about this subject that was done by a group of students and professors at Columbia I'll look for the link and post it.

Do u know the story of the song wahran and the fact that it was not khaled's songs at first but written by a singer sent to "exile" in morrocco because of the repression of the governments against him?

what i like most about "wahran" is how he likens her to a young girl for whom he is worried about when night falls and the undesirable people come out.... His siong "Shahra" from his album with the same name is another underrated gem of his. how he expresses his bitterness (el mi7na) when the girl he loved was tricked into marrying a man she never knew (zawjoouha bil munkar). or "Bakhta" fron his album ENssi.

one of my favourites songs of Khaled is Wahran, because of the lyrics...so touchy, especially when u miss ur bled so much...
" Omri ma nansa bladi, ardi ou ard ajdadi
Wahran douh chababi
Wahran etnassili aadabi
nahalaflak ma ytoulche ghyabi wanoud bin ahli wa hababi
wallah ma ytoulch ghyabi wanoud bin ahli wa hbabi ".

translation/ :)

"I will never forget my country My earth and the earth of my forefathers
Oran the cradle of my childhood
Oran made me forget my sufferings
I swear you that I shall shorten my absence
And shall return among mine and my friends
I swear in front of Allah that I shall shorten my absence And shall return among mine and my friends "...
