Yeah! It was a mini-Fatiha or Fatiha-Express for the busy religious bro/sis. So it goes, "Bissmillah al ra7man el ra733m, wala el daaaleeen, sadaka'llah el 3azeem"

I thought it was a good movie. But what pissed me off was how the cut Sureit il Fati7a short, while that knighting c-r-a-p Orlando Bloom had to state outloud was prolonged as much as possible.

Salam :-) The movie wasn't bad, overall...however, there are historical inaccuracies, and even a few simple parts that any person with an inkling of knowledge about Muslims would have known to fix before releasing the film. My biggest complaint is that the film demonizes organized religion and puts forward the claim that it is individual spiritualism that is the key to what will save the world. Of course, if you look at how this ethic of radical individualism has played out, say in Europe - where a majority of people are areligious, or even here in the states, it's obvious that individuals that clamor for such ideals tend to use this idea as a cover for their desire to escape accountability and discipline - substituting their individual ethic and justifications for religious ones...hehe..ok, but aside from that message which is in vogue today in the 21st cent. Western world, so to speak,there are other problems. For instance, adultery is not stigmatized / portrayed as a romantic, natural occurence...correct even, or at the very least, neutral. Also, Arabs (Muslims) are portrayed for the most part (aside from the character of Salaa7 ad-Deen) as a big mob, unruly. When they're not portrayed as unruly (i.e. the arabs that live with the christians), they're portrayed as the simple dirty brown people. haha. And what was with the messed up Janaza prayer, or with the Muslims each praying in their own little 5 yard radius halo (i.e. not shoulder to shoulder) or the adhan being given while they were supposedely praying in jamaa'3a. That's just a careless disregard for some of hte most basic information about Islam and the way it is practiced...hence, it is propogating more misunderstandings and stereotypes. Back to the whole fleshing out of the characters...even in the fight scenes, esp. towards the end with the defense of Jerusalem (which was portrayed as a benevolent defense on the behalf of hte people by the Christians because the Muslims would slaughter the Christians...which is an inaccurate portrayal of Salah ad-Din...they even show him as threatening to kill women and children if the city is not surrendered at the end...only agreeing not to harm people if the city is surrendered...an inaccuracy). but in the defense of the city, you'll get close up shots of the christians defending the cities...their faces...little heroic music, haha...but the Arabs, again, are portrayed as an impending swarm of locusts and doom for the city and for all the multicultural pluralism that it stood for (haha..i'm so sure that under the christians, Jerusalem was a slice of 21st cent. American society at it's best with ideals of tolerance and pluralism and equality - see the knighting of all the common folk at the end...again, to the dismay of the evil religious people represented by the priest). Finally, the b.s. line about "their Prophet commands them to submit...Our's tells us to choose," or something along those lines was stupid...i realize it's just dialogue between the characters, but it was still dumb and incorrect...no Christian denomination tells you to choose...you believe the doctrine or you don't...you do'nt pick and choose what to believe...not even in the most wild eyed protestant non-denominational church will you find such an ethic of choice..."Will billy, you can choose whether or not to believe in the Trinity." haha..nope, not gonna find it. and if you do, it's probably a hippy unitarian church or some other "progressive" sell out movement that isn't even an accurate portrayal of the religion it claims to represent. and at the very end, the whole line about, "The holy land still has yet to have peace since then till now..1000 years," is absurd. It was peaceful under the Ottomans, which immediately comes to mind. Before the zionist movement, things were pretty peaceful too. After the Crusaders were kicked the hell out by Baybars, it was pretty peaceful too. (correct me if I'm wrong). So, this whole line about "Oh the middle east is always at war and there will never be peace" is convenient and intellectually lazy for an outsider to say...but either way...hehe, It was a good movie outside of these points.
