Knowledge Is The Key??..

Education plays a pivotal role in people?s lives. It has changed the whole complexion of not only societies, but also various countries in this modern world. Terms like underdeveloped, developing and developed countries are used very frequently, and one can understand easily what does this mean. Countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq are called underdeveloped or developing countries, and all the Western European, and Northern American countries are called highly developed States.
This difference of class is only because of education. Industrial revolution in Europe changed France and England and brought them into front line and made them leaders of other European Countries. Newton, Edison, John Lock, Stevenson, Wright brothers, Russo, Micaville and other Scientists, Philosophers made miraculous inventions. Europe came out of dark ages and started making genuine progress. This all happened because utmost attention was diverted from irrelevant matters to science. As people became educated they started learning about their rights and eventually got rid of tyrant kings and other Dictators. Democracy replaced tyranny and dictatorships.
Medical Science has saved millions of people form those diseases that were once incurable. Engineers did unbelievable tasks. Traveling became so fast, quick and easy, distances were shortened. Who could have thought that travel from any Asian country to US would take only 10 hours, instead of months and years.
Education has enlightened people?s vision. They became broadminded. One cannot be deceived mislead by those who have used religion as a tool for their vested interests. Millions of people in Asia/Middle East are still controlled by these religious fanatics. Kings and dictators are playing havoc. They do not want general masses to get education. A clear example is Afghanistan where Taliban government had killed thousands of innocent people for the crime they had never committed.
Western Europe has not fought any war science the Second World War. Education has made them civilized and they hate war. But on the other hand Eastern European, Asian and Middle Eastern Countries are` still going through a torrid time. Every now and then they indulge in unwanted wars, scuffles & skirmishes.
Education sometimes has some negative points as well. All these weapons of mass destructions are the products of scientific development. What happened in Hero Shima and Nagasaki? Millions of people lost their lives within seconds, and now at present we have more destructive bombs then Atom bomb.
But on the whole, Education has brought about positive changes, which were extremely beneficial to human beings. As a Muslim we also believe ?To seek knowledge is a sacred duty, it is obligatory on every Muslim, male and female. The first word revealed of the Qur?an was "Iqra" READ! Seek knowledge! Educate yourselves! Be educated.

I second every point QL makes Zara. Education past high-school (roughly equated with A-Levels or F.Sc. in the Desi system) is quite unnecessary. One must be their own teacher, and seek out their own sources of growth and inspiration. The purpose of "education" should be to "educe" (or bring forth from within) the wisdom that is inherent in every humane being. But instead education has become a form of instilling dogma and mental compartmentalization for the masses. I can say more, but I think QL has spoken well and touched all the important points. Salaam.

peace Zara

i take the spirit of what you are saying but would like to say that although education can be liberating it is also a form of social control and social reproduction and conditioning ... and in that sense is far from liberating ...

after europe came out of the dark ages they cultivated the idea that they had a right to the earth and began a process of colonization -- their philosophers created a morality of their superiority and they obliterated entire peoples the aztec, the maya, and many others through genocide ... they practically got large segments of the chinese population addicted to opium.. and this is just a small portion of the havoc they wrought on the peoples of the earth ... these are not the marks of civilized peoples ..

western europe may not have warred on their own soil since WWII but they certainly have brought war to other parts of the world ...

i will end with one last observation i dont believe that "Democracy replaced tyranny and dictatorships" perhaps it seems this way on the surface ... but the populace is not educated to take their power seriously -- voting has become the opiate of the masses and those who have so called democracy at least in the american case are ruled by elected emperors who represent not the people but multi-national corporations .... who do you think are making the profits from Iraqi reconstruction ...

again Zara i take the spirit of what you are saying but it seemed to me after reading your post that you were a bit one sided with your comment ... we are on the verge of a global ecological disaster -- enlightened educated people would not have let it go this far ... smog was identified as a major result of the automobile when?? more than 50 yrs ago ... anyways i am really gonna stop here

peace out
