Liberate yourself from classical karate

While i'm working on the 2nd part to bruce bio, have a read of an original essay by the man himself.

usuarios.lycos.es

It was written in 1971 for Black Belt magazine and may even be one of the most imporatant articles ever submitted. It introduced Lee?s personal art of jeet kune do as a method for gaining freedom from the dictates of classical training.

Remember that what he proposes in the article was highly controversial at the time, and widely ridiculed by traditionalists. He thought that mastering an art means 'acting' in the style of the master. So mastering Kung fu means mastering it the way the Sensei has done, and therefore 'acting' like him. By doing this one's personal freedom has been lost.

More will be dealt with in this issue later...in the upcoming 2nd part of bio.

I don't know of wing chun being flashy. I agree with everything else, though. As one advances in WC, the forms melt away, and it becomes formless as well. It's an evolution.

Yeah thats it...its all about personal expression and to be honest to oneself. There is no stock solution to fights, you have learn to adapt to the environment and settings.

i really liked Bruce Lee's ability to perform martial arts. He criticised Karate for its broken motions, and Wing Chun for its flashy techniques and didnt think they ideal to use in actual combat. So he created Jeet Kune Do. What i like about it is that JKD was designed to be used in real life situations. It's style is no style. The goal of JKD is not to master certain techniques, but to let your body express the techniques in its own way and everyone can have their own style, and JKD is a form of bringing it out.
