Liverpool Gets Chance To Defend Euorpean Crown!
hmmm... The past few years have been resurgence for England, atleast when it comes to soccer. After hooliganism & underachieving to mediocrity for nearly two decades, the English clubs and national side seem to be on the brink of something solid for years to come. ManU's treble & consistency in the late 90's, Arsenal's masterful execution in the FA cups & Premiership in past years, and now the juggernaut known as Chelski's taking the offensive on the best of Europe year in & year out!
So what else can there be? Howabout a middle tier club winning the Champion's League, being the undisputed Kings of European Soccer?!? Yes, that's Liverpool. And better yet, those dang scousers get to defend their crown next year!
So what do you people think of that? I am ambivalent, to be honest. I am neither ecstatic nor turned off by the news. There has been no precedent on such, so UEFA didn't do England any favors. From now on, four is the maximum number of clubs from a top league that can be invited to the Champion's League and if a defending European Champion isn't amongst the four, they will supercede the fourth team (this year it being Everton, had such a rule existed retrospectively). Also, England loses one UEFA cup team as it will send five instead of four to next year's Champion's League finals.
Only the strength of Premiership has allowed this to happen, the competiveness & recognition that it's really a top flight league within itself relative to other top leagues. It's not all fish & chips for the scousers though, they have to start in the first round of the Champions League.
Come to think of it, here's what I would've done IF I was the FA:
Let Everton and Liverpool play a home-n-home series (2matches) to determine who takes the final Champion's League spot that is reserved for England. That would've however been a victory for UEFA as they wouldn't be a part of the 'bloodshed' and a defeat for the English FA as they would send four, not the five now being sent, to the Champion's League Finals of 2005-2006.
