LONDON IS THE BEST CITY IN AMERICA by Laura Dave

I read A LOT for work. Manuscripts come and go for me in a papery haze and it takes a whole lot for one of them to catch and hold my attention, being as jaded a reader as I am. So, to say that I was pleased when one such manuscript crossed my hands last week is an understatement. I was THRILLED.
The yet-to-be-published novel is called LONDON IS THE BEST CITY IN AMERICA (oh, and for all of you sticklers for grammar, I realize that the titles of novels should be italicized or underlined rather than capitalized, but we capitalize titles that we ourselves publish in our company. It's become a habit for me) and it's written by a first time author, Laura Dave, who used to be a student of Melissa Bank (another one of our authors, Bank wrote the hugely successful GIRL'S GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING and THE WONDER SPOT).
In any case, the book is BRILLIANT. I picked up the manuscript, which is roughly 280 pages, thinking that I'd read half of it before calling it a night. Wouldn't you know it: I stayed up until 3AM, finishing the entire thing. The story follows Emmy, a 20-something woman who, after walking out on her fiance, has holed herself up in a small fishing village in Rhode Island. She's told her family back in Scarsdale, NY that she's working on a documentary about fishermen's wives, when in fact, the film isn't quite going anywhere (she can't get beyond interviewing the wives---she's interviewed HUNDREDS and the "filmmaking" is going on three years now). So, July 4th weekend sees Emmy returning home for her older brother's wedding, only her brother gets cold feet and together the two of them try to figure out what's holding them back from pursuing any firm commitments in their lives.
I don't read chic lit and don't know if all chic lit is this good, but guys this novel is excellent. It's funny, insightful, sweet, cinematic, just everything that makes for a great summer read. The film rights have already been optioned by Reese Witherspoon and Universal Pictures (she's set to star)!
Look out for it next May. Trust me...you'll LOVE it!
