Looking for apartment and/or roommate

Salaam All,

I?m going to be a NYU grad student this fall and am trying to find a place to stay. Are there any females out there looking for a roommate or are renting out a studio (end of august)? Just looking for something modest and clean?. Realistically, how much should I expect to pay for student type housing within a 30 minute commute from school? I?ve been finding ads for studios in the $900-$1000 range, but how scary are they? Is this feasible? I?m a little nervous about the whole move, so I am hoping to get some tips from my fellow naseebians?.. also, should I bring my car with me? I know the subway is better than Chicago?s, but will bringing it with me become an inconvenience?

Btw, inshallah I?ll be out there at the end of july to look for myself?. Just looking for a heads up in the meanwhile?.

Thanks!
Sarah

I guess it all depends, but ideally no more than $900-1000.... i guess i'm used to rent being near the $6-700 price point.... i think I may have found a muslim female to room with who is looking at the same numbers....

gracias por tu ayuda :D !

i have a lot of work ahead of me.....i'm looking for studio since I don't think I can live with a stranger who is non-muslim (i've had my share of roommates, and it's always a gamble.... at least with a Muslim, there is some common ground... at least one would hope!)

1. craiglist website, 2. leave the car at home, 3. lookout for ads at the bustops or bulletin board on campus - actually, not just nyu, but columbia, fordham etc. 4. then there's hoboken, jersey city, astoria, brooklyn. good luck :)

Pakidude is spot on with his advice. If you are dead set on living in the City (Manhattan), look for a roommate to offset the costs of housing. Check Astoria (Queens) - it's a nice neighborhood and a short ride into the City. You can still find some good bargains there - that is you can get a one bedroom as opposed to a studio. August is a busy month in the rental market so give yourself extra time.

Leave the car at home. A garage in the City will cost you a minimum of $300 per month plus tax. Parking in Queens and Brooklyn are much more manageable based on the neighborhood.

Having lived in both Queens and Manhattan, I can say that living in the City has a much different feel.
