ETHNIC MINORITY FOUNDATION (EMF)
POST TITLE: DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
REPORTING TO: PROJECT DIRECTOR
SALARY RANGE: Up to ?26k
OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
The Ethnic Minority Foundation (EMF) is delivering a development project in three cities, London, Manchester (including Bradford) and Bristol, aimed at ascertaining whether a voluntary and community organisation like EMF can better reach excluded and hard to reach communities than statutory bodies; thereby providing better services to such communities.
The project has been set up so that Muslim women can be provided with skills in Cultural and Creative Industry (CCI) like arts, drama, music, radio and television, broadcasting, painting, writing, sports, folk music etc to enable them to become employed or self employed.
The project is staffed with a Director (Project Director) and three full time Development Officers who will work with 12 volunteers and who, in turn, will reach 100 beneficiaries, mainly women from the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities. The beneficiaries will be trained by the volunteers in whichever form of CCI activity they are interested in. A laptop will be loaned to the beneficiaries to use at home
Each of the beneficiaries will be trained to use a computer to enable them to use e-mail, Internet, writing curriculum vit? and developing job interview techniques etc.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Development Officer?s job will involve:
1. Motivating Muslim women, in a culturally sensitive way, to attend training sessions and to aspire to work in CCI
2. Researching and writing PR and news features
3. Training and supporting the volunteers in IT and CCI where required, and passing on such skills to the ultimate beneficiaries.
4. Editing and production of the project?s Website, and reporting back to the Project Director on a weekly basis.
5. Office management and helping in organising meetings and seminars.
6. Finding job placements for the beneficiaries for work experience in the CCI work related area of the beneficiaries? choice.
7. Recruiting, motivating and training four volunteers and in turn 35 beneficiaries in assigned cities
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Essential Criteria
1. A good knowledge of and cultural sensitivity towards working with Muslim women
2. A fluent or working / knowledge of Community languages: Urdu, Punjabi or Bengali is essential.
3. You will be enthusiastic and hard working and keen to be part of a successful new project
4. Experience and proficiency in IT skills
5. Experience in public relations or key communications role, either in charity, private or public sector
6. Strong written and verbal skills
7. You will be a clear strategic thinker who can shape the development of EMF?s profile
8. Demonstrative ability to grasp complex messages and communicate in an effective way with Muslim women or those from an ethnic background.
9. Highly motivated and persuasive professional with an excellent presentation, negotiation and communication skills
10. Excellent project management skills with ability to meet deadlines and prioritise work
11. Organisational and multi-tasking skills
12. As a good team player, you will need to demonstrate your ability to work effectively with colleagues across the breadth of the organisation.
13. Able to organise press and media events to publicise the work of the organisation and associated charities.
Desirable Criteria
1. Experience in CCI.
2. Degree in IT, media or related area preferred, but not essential if you have these skills through work experience.
3. Communications role in the charity sector
Special Requirements
& #61623; Willingness to undertake evening / weekend duties to be able to work with volunteers and beneficiaries.
& #61623; Willingness to travel
& #61623; Willingness to provide occasional support to other teams within the organisation.
Terms of employment
Please note that this is a 15 months project and your employment will cover this period of time commencing on (will inform later). There will be a 3-months probation period.
