Ramadan Mubarak to everyone :)
I didn't want to ruin the funny post that had a few things about how Ramadan makes it harder to concentrate and do things....so thought to share a thought that it triggered here with regards to how it is difficult to function in Ramadan....that actually fasting is "supposed" to give us more strength, and make us more steadfast, because our body is free from the physical material that enslaves it, and able to focus on higher aims in life...and it is no wonder that important events in our history ..such as the battle of Badr, the opening of Mecca, and others....took place in Ramadan....
It is interesting to know how Jihad and Ramadan were prescribed during the same year....and that the Muslims never delayed their jihad plans because fasting would make them weaker and harder to focus....
I remind myself first to ponder these meanings tomorrow insha'Allah when I start yawning in front of my pile of work :) If the early Muslims were able to conquer their enemies during Ramadan...then surely insha'Allah I can finish typing up the reports that I have due insha'Allah.....I hope :)

I would not be surprised if the current methodology used in academia could have been taken from the Islamic civilazation.
Well, there was a nice discussion today about how Islam was the forerunner of such a system. For example, with the sound ahadith of the prophet (pbuh), it is not just sufficient to have mentioned that the prophet said so and so,..but through the system of (sanad), it is traced back through all of the people who heard it. Weaker hadiths are labeled as such, etc...just like with scientific research...
Islam even takes this system to an advanced (and more refined) level...by caring about the "moral calibre" of where the resource came from, to the point that a hadith was discounted because the person who said had heard it, was observed to be cheating its animal pretending to show it that it was gonna be fed, when the person didn't have anything for the animal...

Did you guys know that the Angel of Death is *not* called "3azra2eel" as commonly alluded to in the Egyptian Culture?!!!!!!!! The angel is just called the Angel of Death. "3azra2eel" is an intrusion of no basis...

:) it means settling dispute between people (al-esla7 been alnas) it goes along the following verse:
"Verily, the Believers are brothers. Then set matters right between your brothers and be conscious of Allah in order that you may obtain mercy" (49:10)

Of course, in the most ideal case, people are thoughful and aware of the purpose behind the hijab, but the only difference here though between Klein and Allah in this example, is that you are obeying Allah's orders, so insha'Allah you get rewarded for that even if it's not based on full understanding of that responsibility and obligation. We obey our parents and do not play with matches when we are younger even though we do not have the understanding of how matches could lead to burning the whole house down. Know what I mean?!
Also, as br. Amr said, I have heard some scholars say that one should still do an action, and insha'Allah the understanding will come. For example...sometimes when we pray, we are not in a total state of khoshoo3 and concentration. Does that mean we should stop praying? No, we pray because we are obligated to, and then work on improving our state of concentration, etc.

My comment below was against any bias of any kind, toward assuming good intentions, and toward saying that both the internals and appearances are important, not one alone. Please go and re-read it again now, esp. the last paragraph.
Anyhow, thanks for the interesting discussion, it opens many important topics like: intentions, sincerity, judging, etc. so lets try to add some posts along these lines as a reminder.
However, I don't agree with the wording "without knowing Allah that well", I hear it also when it comes to men growing their beards. I don't think we can say that, however, I wholeheartedly know that u meant good out of it. I think u meant that we should work out both the internals and appearance at the same time to get the best reward.
The thing is that some people find it easier to work out appearance first, yet others work out internals first. As long as we take small steps and start with things that we can afford and ask Allah to grant us the power to do what we can't do, then it is all good inshaaAllah. Every muslim or muslima wants to be a fully practicing one, it is just all about education and keeping good company that help and support each other.

But when Allah and the Prophet (pbuh) ask us to wear the hijab and modest clothing........................... .........

A note about sincerity...and purifying our hearts from reya2 (showing off/boasting)...
1) A just ruler
2) A youth who grew up in the worship of Allah
3) A man whose heart is attached to the mosques
4)Two people who love each other for the sake of Allah, meeting and parting for that purpose.
5) A man who is called by a woman of beauty and position, but he says: 'I fear Allah'
6) A man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity.
7)A man who remembered Allah in private and his eyes shed tears.
*The man stuff go for women too..
(Man, after experiencing the hard-to-bear heat in Egypt during the month of August, I sure pray that we are among those shaded by Allah's shade insha'Allah)..

Here is a cute story that i found on the net:
There was once an African farmer who had heard how others had made fortunes finding diamonds. In his quest to become rich he sold his farm and spent his life looking for diamonds.
Meanwhile, the person he sold the farm to, was one day passing by a stream on his land where he saw something sparkle. When he put his hand in the water it appeared to be a translucent rock. He took the rock and put it on the mantelpiece. One day a geologist was visiting the new owner and asked if he could examine the rock. It turned out that this was the largest uncut diamond that had ever been found.
Similar is the case of Muslims who maybe searching for wisdom elsewhere when they have it right with them in the Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. (author unknown)

Virtue of reading suret Al-Kahf on Friday
Hadith:
"Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu?ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next."
Also, whomever memorizes the first ten verses, helps protect him/her from the Dajjal..according to the prophet (pbuh)
It is also recommended to make a lot of do3a2 on Friday as, "There is such an hour on Friday that if any Muslim makes dua in it, his dua will definitely be accepted. "
