Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the muslim philosopher of India put it really well in his following couplet encouraging us to break away from these cultural boundaries..:

"Hawas ne tukre tukre kar diya hay na?u insan ko
ukhuwwat ka bayan ho ja mohabbat ki zaban ho ja
ye Hindi, wo Khurasani, ye Afghani, wo Turani
tu ay sharmindayeh sahil uchhal kar bekaraan ho ja"

"Greed has torn apart humankind. You (Muslims), become role models of love and brotherhood. Get beyond the narrow boundaries of nationalities (like Indian, Khurasani, Afghani, and Turkish) and jump into the limitless ocean (of Islam)."

One should be weary about being too enthusiastic or be too involved in "south-asian/desi" events!!
A lot of times these events tend to be hijacked/dominated by Hindu culture & social events, and muslims seem to make no effort to differentiate or distance themselves from being grouped with them. Muslims even of south asian background need to associate themselves more with the muslim events and less with those where they are grouped with non-muslims, especially with Hindu culture!
