This SriLankan rapper is beginning to raise her voice in USA after having her biggest success in UK even before releasing her first album (thanks to internet and file sharing). Her first song "Galang" was instant hit when it spread all over internet. Her rap songs are actually a flavor of African Rap, which is quite different from our own USA brand of rap. But her lyrics, if you DO understand them, are really angry, direct, and very very catchy.

I know you can find lots of great articles and reviews online (thanks to google) so I am not going to tell you the whole story, but MIA was actually born in UK and spend her life in India and Srilanka. Her father is (if he is still alive) a "real" Tamil rebel who left his family and joined Tamil Tigers movement.

She grown up in London most of her teens and lived in the area of African majority. She picked up rap as her instrument to put her anger into words.
