Moving to Chicago

Hey what's up everyone? My name's Zia and I'm moving to Chicago this month to work at Alinea restaurant. Does anyone know of any good apartments in downtown Chicago that are available to rent or are going to be rented soon? If so I would truly appreciate the help. Moving to Chicago from NY and don't know anyone out there yet.

haha, alright well then I'll have a house warming and everyone will be invited. It'll be cool to meet some people in Chicago. But I hope you all understand it will be a while before I'm completely moved in and settled. So maybe we can plan a gathering somewhere else for whenever I get there. I'll be in Chicago from the 15th to the 22nd to meet my new boss, work for a few days, find a place to live, etc. Then I'll be back in NY for 2 weeks and then the permanent move will be early September. If we could plan something for saturday the 20th or Sunday the 21st so I could meet all of you that would be awesome. If not, there's always September

DC1, thanks, I'll save the number. Right now I don't know if I'm going to be living alone or need a roomate. But I'll keep the number on hand

Ghaza and DC1 - yea so far I've been using craigslist the most, but I'm gonna wait until I'm in Chicago (which wil be the 15th) and check out places first hand before making any decision. But thank you to everyone for all the help

Rush - yea I've had my experiences living with desis and non-desis too. If I had to decide based on experience alone, I would live with a non-desi. I don't know how it is in chicago, and not meant as a generalization, but there's a lot of "desi drama" surrounding ny/nj desis that I need to get away from

Shuja - Thanks, I might just take you up on that. As far as using utensils with the deep dish, I might just eat it with my hands anyway. It's just the desi way to do things, hehe

I recently moved to Chicago as well and tried the deep dish pizza. It tastes great ...however, I got tired of using utensils to eat pizza. Pizza is meant to be eaten w/ hands....and w/ deep dish it is hard to to do.

DC1 - I'll check it out. I didn't know there was a website just for desi roomates. I'll take any race that's willing to pay their share of the rent though :)

phoenix - thanks for the tips. But I'll have to check a map of Chicago to see what all those towns are, hehe. By the way, why can't I try the deep-dish or italian beef? I'm a chef, I have to try food!

Hey Zia, welcome to chicago! I moved from NY to Chicago indirectly, too. I have heard all the buzz about Alinea, and I hope it as cool a place to work at as it is supposed to be to dine at. I think that Alinea is about a block away from the Red Line El stop at North and Clybourn (I know that right now that means nothing to you but just in case you see a listing that tells you how far the apt. is from the train).

In addition to looking at craigslist and sublet.com, try looking at this site: www.chicagoreader.com or this one: apartmentpeople.com. The apartmentpeople found my friend a great place in the middle of lincoln park without charge within a couple hours. Other naseebers probably know more about neighborhoods than I do, but you'll be paying more for places right around where you work and "Near North" (which includes Lincoln Park, Old Town, the Depaul area and is actually north of the loop) and less if you are willing to move further out. Good luck finding a place. PS When you get here don't let anyone get you to eat deep dish pizza or something called "italian beef"

Thanks for the tips, greatly appreciate it. Will check it out. Alinea is actually all Chef Grant Achatz' tasting menu. There are no a la carte options. You can get a tasting of, I believe, 8, 12, or 20 courses. The 20 course will run about $175 without wine pairings. And I dunno if I can hook a brother up, I didn't start yet, haha.
