muraqba
...can someone provide with an understanding of what it is?
Alhamdulilah. I am sorry if you felt I was too hard on you in the other thread about the hadra. Please forgive me if that is the case. ma'as-Salaama...
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Raheem...as-Salaamu 'alaykum...I have found that the definition and practice of muraqabah can and does vary between the different turuq and even withing different branches of the same tariqa (eg. Naqshbandi). Anyway, here are some other sources to add the list of very useful information that has already been provided:
About Sh. Nuh I like the fact that he defends Islam against non-muslims. That alone is worthy of praise. But I didn't see fitna in the criticisms below. Isn't an outsider entitled to a heartfelt observation?
salam. amir, thanks for that link. that was the first place i looked actually and im still reading through it. appreciate all your comments. and to the fitnaspreaders: la kum deen akum wa liya deen.
Muslims need to do "more dhikr and less bicker" -- shaykh hamza. HAHA, shaykh hamza's the man, but people attack him left and right as well... what do they get out of it? nothing. One of the conditions of worldy success for Muslims, and we do want worldy success in order to be able to establish justice, is that we not divide up, and all this bickering causes just that, very unfortunate... but Allah can easily replace us.
Its so hard to talk about anything on this site in public without having an outburst like superman's. This site is sooo filled with fitna, I tried leaving it once before, and I came right on back. If there is any Muslim out there that can help another establish his prayers -- we should AT THE VERY LEAST not attack him... like shaykh nuh. But as for shaykh nuh, he's brought so many people into Islam, my favorite thing about him is the awesome job he does in dismantelling the athiest orientalist's attacks on Islam. I mean people have got to give him credit for that.
It is clear that you do not respect Sheikh Nuh. This is your right, but out of respect for scholars and fear of Allah it is best that you keep your comments to yourself, for ghiba is an enormity. As far as the happening in VA, that was most likely a suhba, a bi-annual meeting of the murids with the sheikh. It is usually about three to four days long, and there are around 250-300 people who show, (Do the math: 250 murids and one sheikh) and thus there is not a lot of time for the sheikh to answer everyone's questions, especially when his time is packed with durus, group and personal meetings, and Q and A, not to mention is own personal 'ibada. After his durus, he inquires if anyone would like to take the tariq. There are usually loads of brothers and sisters who do. However, they are not left alone to wander in the darkness afterwards. This is clearly an observation of someone who does not have a relationship with the sheikh. As for your comment about "individual, specifically suited, formula for designed for your nafs", this is exactly what the sheikh does. I, like other of his murids, speak with the sheikh on a regular basis. He not only gives all of his murids the wird of the Shadhili tariqa (I don't know if you were saying that he did not; if so, you are grossly misinformed) but he also (like the Prophet, salallahu 'aleihi wa 'ala alihi wa sallam) gives us heart felt, individualized, personal advice which, if implemented, works. This is why we love him.
Here is an honest criticism which I ask dear readers to respond to with compassion and understanding. You speak of "tak baya with Shaykh Nuh" as if its some high and mighty achievement. I know orders where people try for 20 years and even then some have been known to wait longer. This gentleman literally had a deciple-mass-production line going. I saw it first-hand, at Sterling, VA, back in late summer of 2003. I myself spoke with people who had come to have their questions answered, and their concerns addressed. What happened instead was increduluous! Everyone present was being churned through the "baya' Mill", almost like: throw them all against the wall, and see which ones stick. I found this totally against the rules of any Tariqah I have ever come across, and have even read of such 'taraiq', in not the most praiseworthy words, in the works of Idries Shah, the last 'Teacher of the Age' if there ever was one. Do you people not feel any belittlement of your desire to access the trugh given that you have not received any "individual, specifically suited, formula for designed for your nafs"? After all, that's what a "Wird" or "invocation" is supposed to be, which every deciple of of any master worth his weight receives upon being inducted into the tariqah. Specifically suited for what the master sees as this person's need. Just as a doctor won't prescribe the same medicine to everyone, and exactly as our beloved Prophet Muhammad (AHSAMWAM) himself did, responding to every questioner uniquely.
oh yeah, and is there any connection between shaykh nuh and shaykh muhammad ya'qubi... i love shaykh muhammad, he's so the man! ... i mean besides the fact that they are both shadihilis, did they study w/ eachother or anything?
since you guys are very familiar w/ shaykh nuh... primarily two things bug me about shaykh nuh, two things that keep me from going deeper in my knowledge through him (dunno if that sounds right). 1 - The hadra, what's the deal with that? isn't it bida? don't any of his mureeds feel that way? 2 - his strong cricisms of Ibn Taymiyya and his students (rahimahumullah) , they did a lot for our ummah but yet shaykh nuh attacks them strongly. On the one hand I see him telling salafis that ibn taymiyya was part of the qadiri tariqa (therefore come right in), on the other hand I see him vehemently attacking ibn taymiyya as if he was the pioneer salafi. Can you guys shed some light on this?
Ive taken baya with Shaykh Nuh as well. Amir- Part of the beauty of the muraqaba dars' is the struggle, never getting complacent or self satisfied, so although you may not be reaching "a goal" your still benefitting tremendously, so just keep on chugging. =) Talib- Sleeping on flat surfaces does wonders for your back as well!
Princess, How about yourself?
Amir, tell me about it...my only tips are to go to bed at an early hour and try to sleep with wudu. This might just be for me, but when I sleep in my bed I sleep very deeply, thus I moved to a less comfortable spot. It is amazing when you think about how we sleep on high, feathered matresses, while the Best of Creation slept on a matress made of palm fiber. So thin in fact, that it left marks on his skin when he awoke. Salallahu 'aleihi wa 'ala ahlihi wa sallam.
... as for maisum's question, what is muraqaba, I am most familiar with the naqshbandi tariqa: www.tasawwuf.org (see "lesson one")... it is VERY beneficial if you can keep it up. I haven't been able to though... at least not all of it, not that it's hard, i'm just lazy/busy
talib have you gotten through shaykh nuh's muraqaba dars? I listened to it on tasawwuf.com / suhba.org and whoa, it seemed tough... i'm still trying to establish my salah, and am faaaaaaar from the 40-day goal... any tips?
Thanks Sufi...U r so right about that..This hadith indeed describes the real objective of muraqba as well as the goal of every human life (to know oneself, to know Allah)......Talib, i guess what u are talking about is called "Mujahida", and not muraqba....its the same in every tareeqa whether Chishtia, Naqshbandiya, Qadiriya, Taifuriya, Qalandariya,Azeemia etc....
Your explantion is very impressive Shauq. If I may expound more on Muraqba its a more structured form of Riazat (contemplation) where one just does not concentrates to achieve a 'higher spiritual level as other religions strive but with Muraqba one lifts the veils of seperation until he experinces the union or rather the RE-union. Then the Hadiths unfolds, "Wa ma arfa naafsahu, faqat wa aarfa raabahu".
Muraqaba, at least in the Shadhili tariqa, is a regiment that one takes upon himself to rid himself of the haram, or other deficiencies in his practice. For example, carefully observing his prayers, trying to not miss one in forty days; abstaining from anger, backbiting, slander, etc. In essence, it is a way to be vigilant of your heart and practice in an attempt to draw closer to your Lord.

Yes, I have taken baya with Sheikh Nuh Ha Mim Keller.
