My Falasteen Trip

I'm going to Palestine soon! Got my reservations! Have not been there in over 20 years, so I'm very excited.

Can you guys give me some suggestions as to what I should see or where I should hangout.

Also...any advice on what I should take with me...medication, electonics, that kinda stuff.

Thanks a lot!

Ali

you lucky guy that you visit this great and beautiful country. Inshallah you will not have problems at the airport in Tel aviv. Just stay friendly (even if you dont want). Be careful what you answr. Dont say that you are going to any peace organisation like ISM and so on. They hate ISM!!! They would directly send you back. Just say that you want to visit this country, to see Jerusalem, haifa, nazareth and Jaffa. I dont know if you have relatives in the west bank, than say that you are going MAYBE to visit them, if there is enough time. Dont mention that you want to visit Nablus, jenin or Hebron (Al Khalil). These are critical areas. Maybe you can mention that you want to visit the church in Betlehem. They will ask you if you have friends in this country and maybe they want also to have their names. And of course where you are going to stay in this country. Inshallah you will enjoy it. Try to visit the old city of hebron. Jaffa is great. Haifa is mixed and also beautiful. Visit the german colony street and the enjoy the view in Haifa from the india temple (forgot also the name)....But dont forget to visit also akka ! This is the old city in the north. It is wonderful....you see you will have a full schedule plan. So enjoy it and take inshallah great memories with you.

Yes, very true Platoshadow. Thanks for that reminder. I can't get out of the mindset of thinking of the greedy people in Jordan, but the situation *is* quite different in Palestine.

i tell this to my mom all the time, she's hard core haggler. she's worried they'll think that they ripped us off or that we are stupid. Khalas, take a hit for your people. let them call you stupid. you're feeding their kids, sending them to school and makeing the next generation stronger. When i was there last, Nablus and Ramallah where shut down tight. It was right in the end of the first year of this intifadah. People are hungy, business is slow. Feed them. no shame in it.

don't bargain too hard. they need the money more than you. a bit of token barganing to not loose face. if it makes you feel better think of it as charity. or if you prefer, funding just a bit of a free Palestine.

i'll be in falasteen july 8th-ish to about mid august where you gonna be? we may cross paths. Best pizza place in Ramallah is Osama's pizza. if you go at the right time you run into pickup truck full's of activists, Solidarity Movement guys and gals, Peace activists, and on a happy occasion a philosophy teacher form my old school. Apparently he runs with ISM now. cool guy. it's by the communications directors office of Fatah i believe... communications... maybe education ministry. i forget. one of the two though. a barghouti's office. or maybe one of Ashrawi's.... ok forget it, run around, last iwas there they'd enshrined it, after the yahood ran around and ransaked it and trashed everything. it's a makeshift museum now.

Don't speak Arabic with your American accent in the souk if you want a good deal. They will never bargain with you. Take a family member who lives there, stay quiet, and let them bargain. If you have to , wear tight jeans to fit in with the other guys there, so they can't tell you're a foreigner. LOL... Don't ask for temperature in Fahrenheit, either- it's a dead give-away :)

Niyyalak that you are going there! I wish it was me. Just take a lot of anti-mosquito spray cause there's a lot there, especially in the West Bank. You MUST go to: Jerusalem, Haifa, Acca, and Nazareth. You MUST eat everything you can there- the food is AWESOME. Try the shawarma in a baguette if you go to Nazareth- that's heaven. And the falafel in the Quds is awesome. Be sure you go to the old market in Jerusalem- I forgot how many years old it is , but it's really old and the ultimate authentic Palestinian souk experience. Don't let the yahood get to you. From what I hear, you can smart off to them if you want to, if they start bothering you- you got an American passport right? Be careful about saying anything you don't want them to hear in Arabic cause akhwat il shillin, a lot of them understand Arabic. And for God's sake- don't get on a yahoodi bus, ok? Stay safe & HAVE FUN!!
