My Neighbour Totoro
This film is a complete charm and I owe it to a good friend of mine for not only recommending it but also for lending it to me to watch!!! :)
When two young girls move to the country with their father, they have a lot to discover. In the garden is a huge Camphor tree which houses a very intriguing neighbour that the youngest sibling (cute little Mei) discovers one day. First it is thought that Mei's new friend is just a figment of her imagination but later Satsuki the older sibling meets Mei's new friend too. Mei has named him Totoro. Totoro later comes to the rescue of the two girls with the aid of Nekobasu a magical cat-bus!
I loved Satsuki's character, the older and caring sibling who is sensible and responsible, making lunch boxes and food for her father and little sister in her mother's absence. What a star. Also, little Mei is just the cutest little animation character ever! She kept falling over because she has so much life and energy as 4 year olds do! The part when she bursts out crying whilst holding a cob of corn was so adorable, I felt like scooping her up in my arms and giving her a hug! But then I remembered it was just an animation...
Look out for the idea of the 'dustbunnies' which are reminiscent of the little soot-workers in Spirited Away who fuel the fires for the baths! This has become one of my most favourite films, right up there with Spirited Away amongst others!
