NAS

What would you guys recommend, for a small business NAS.

I have been checking out the buffalo tera station, but i dont know if ntfs/ 2000/2003/ active directory permissions are propagated though this file system (as its not ntfs)

any (in-expensive) recommendations?

erg sorry
we use a hitachi SAN on our Sunfire and the big 14tb netap SAN (the SAN behind the netapp) is all native w/mcdata switches. We were going to go with brocade, but we already had mcdata on the hitachi so we opted to stick with one vendor. We saw no functional or price difference (at our part of the range) between the two switches. Bear in mind that I am a security guy, not a sysadmin :)

Abshaw: Not sure exactly how small is the business you are talking here. But check Ximeta.com www.ximeta.com See if it solves your purpose.

I've used Ximeta Netdisk over small network for my old company... mainly for backups storage. You can also stack multiple ximeta products to cater for future growth. check their site for details.

NFS? I am sure it supports CIFS (which is what your AD should be using anyway... I would absolutly NOT trust an MS implementaiton of NFS (server or client)). We have some Snap servers running as CIFS and NFS servers and they have not failed in over 3 years (from what I hear, anyway). Our main SAN is a Netapp, I forget which model, but its 14 terabytes with room for 20 or 30 more. We also have a Hitachi 4tb storage system on our Sun Fire 6800. It sucks, don't ever ever EVER buy hitachi for storage. :) Personally I would just build a nice Athlon64fx or opteron box with FreeBSD for amd64 and run samba... that's basically what all of these things are (with the appropriate markup for stainless steel covers, salesdweebs in prada suits, tote bags, frisbees, etc.).
