Naseeb Image Protection?

When you right click on a picture on this website, you come across a menu which has an item titled ?Naseeb Image Protection?. When you click on it, it shows your username and IP address and asks you not to download images from this site. It may appear to be a useful protection mechanism, but the fact is that digital content protection is impossible on current platforms. If something appears on your display, or plays through your sound card, you can always capture it if you want to, without giving any clue to the source of the content that you are doing it.

In this case, if you want a picture, all you need to do is:

Similarly, if there is an audio stream playing on your PC, you can capture it by recording the stereo mix of your sound card in any sound recording software. I think digital content protection is in its infancy, and quite impossible to enforce. Operating systems can go a step ahead and integrate content protection services, but who can stop anyone from taking a screenshot or recording audio externally? This problem remains open for research.

To publish information or not is an interesting debate. I had a similar conversation with one of my managers once. The question was that why we publish vulnerabilities of Windows when issuing patches, making it easier for hackers to write exploits targeting un-patched systems. Personally, I think that such information should be shared so that people know exactly what are they up against. But not everyone shares this opinion.

I think the process by which a person can bypass the so called 'image protection' is more known than one may think. I know plenty of 'non techies' that can do it.

I believe a point of this JE is to show that the image protection is not as secure as one may think. So, if one is concerned about any abuses to his/her photo(s), it might be wiser not to put any up.

Think positively. This would make people realize that Image Protection doesn't work, so they should be careful about what they put online.
