Neruda and Faiz

Is it not strange that all great poets and writers were leftist of sorts? Neruda's friend was Allende, the President of Chile, who was later replaced by the American sponsored dictator Pinochet. Neruda was deeply effected by that. Neruda and Faiz Ahmed Faiz I believe both received the Lenin Prize (the Communist world's equivalent of the Nobel Prize) at the same time. Faiz was probably more leftist in his poetry though. In any case, I don't think one can divorce the person's sensitiveness to the social disequilibrium, the intolerance between nations, within faiths etc and the poetry of the legends.

yeah it was a comparison. great poets tend to be ambivalent towards religion and others are pretty much against it. bala was one of the exceptions but he turned conservative in his latter years.

secondly, great poets don't speak in terms of nations or religions. that's a sin. they speak for humanity!

Neruda was actually very active in Chilean politics. He was a prominent member of the Chilean Communist Party and held a few government posts, even being named the party's candidate for president at one point. He was exiled because of Chile's ban on Communism and some of his greatest poems are his political ones (although I, myself, prefer the romance). Literature and politics make strange but fruitful bedfellows.

Poetry is a form of expression, so I wouldn't think that being a great poet necessitates political leanings in either direction (or any of all the directions present at the time). Still, I agree that some poets have utilized poetry to express their ideals and thoughts, or to express their deep dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, or their hope and vision for the future (I have to mention Allama Iqbal, and there are many others as well).
