New Internship... Advice?

Assalamu alaykum,

i've just started an internship at a high school in a special ed resource class room. so far, we've just had inservice and the students don't come until thursday. i'm quite nervous, particularly because my mentoring teacher is so laid back and hasn't given me much information of my role in the class. furthermore, i'm familiar with CDC-A (comprehensive developmental class room - activity based) which serves low-functioning students, with mental retardation, autism, and the like more so than this arrangement and am not sure if i can do well.

so basically, any advice? for the veterans out there, how was your first year teaching? any tips?

jazak'Allahu khairan in advance.

- saimah.

congratulations for the good start.

yes, one thing about youth - their questions are almost always honest without any maliciousness. Glad you saw that.

with dua'as

salams guys,

jazak'Allahu khairan for the naseeha!

well, its been great so far - i walked in (two hours after school started as i still have my summer graduate classes) to find one student yell "whatcyou got on yo head?" while his sister remrimanded him for doing so. it was nice actually. they're well-intentioned curious minds. and the school is a year round system, hence starting in july.

my mentoring teachers are very young but extremely wise alhamdulillah and yes, i'm convinced that's from the experience they've obtained throughout the years. most of the students are either very behind academically and socially or mentally retarded.

anyways, make du'a for tawfiq (success) and taysir (ease).

thanks again!

salams,
saimah.

Just relax and dive in. Nothing can prepare you except for the experience itself. I wish you all success and ease.

Saima,

I have never taught high school but remember my Student Teaching Expereince. It is scary, but a wonderful opportunity. No amount of classroom learning will prepare you for working in a classroom. You need to roll up your sleeves and dive in.

I was lucky that I had cooperating teachers in both my regular ed and special ed internships that let me observe the first week and then handed over the classroom to me.

I assume you are working in a summer program but you will still need to set up a routine and focus on classroom management. If you dont properly do this well in the beginning there is no point trying to teach anything afterwards...it will all go astray.

Use your gut instinct. Try things you have read about to see if they work and do not be afraid to put your own twist on lessons and tasks.

Hope things work out for you. Good Luck!
