Beyond Bellydance!
Come to the Arab Dance Workshop
at the Revive Center in New Haven, CT
Friday-Sunday, November 4-6, 2005
with Nourhan Sharif, Amel Tafsout,Karim Nagi Mohammed, and Kay Hardy Campbell
*Three days of workshops and instruction*
*Two dance party shows with live music and DJ*
The ARAB DANCE SEMINAR is the first event of its kind in America. The goal of this intensive weekend of workshops, lectures, performances and dance parties is to give the student a comprehensive Arab cultural dance experience.
Going beyond nebulous "Bellydance" or generic "Middle Eastern" categories, the Seminar puts all the skills, techniques and practices back into their cultural contexts. The Arab world, home of over 20 countries in 4 zones (North Africa, Egypt, Levant, and The Gulf) is the origin and breeding ground for multiple styles and practices with a common language and aesthetic.
Sponsored by Karim Nagi turbotabla.com) and Programs in
International Educational Resources (PIER)at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies.
sounds very interesting...i may be in stamford sometime next week. I'll try to see if I can get a friend to go with me. :) Thanks for the info rhoque. :)
Tues. Nov 1
Broken Wings - 7:30 pm
The State Art Cinema, Stamford
Israel, 2002, 86 minutes
Hebrew, with subtitles
Director/Filmmaker: Nir Bergman
Superbly acted, this touching and eloquent Israeli drama does not concern itself with political and religious conflicts, but rather focuses on the everyday battles of a family in crisis after the sudden death of the husband and father. Maya, a 17-year old budding singer-songwriter, must forgo her own dreams and try to hold her three siblings and mother together. With sincerity and dashes of quirky humor, Bergman and the cast of talented young actors takes us on a moving and ultimately life-affirming journey as they navigate the tricky waters of family dynamics. Winner of nine Israeli Film Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. Before the film join us for a dessert reception provided by the Center Women of the JCC
