Non Fiction Ignored
Are we supposed to talk about fiction only? What are your favourites in nonfiction? What (in nonfiction) is everybody reading nowadays?
hehe definetly... its actually decent. i didnt realize that its written from a christian point of view so it talks about jesus christ "our savior" a lot (doesnt mean its bad, i just makes it feel like its an exclusively christian book). it is interesting bc u first deduce what type of personality you have and based on that what traits in other ppl annoy you....
i just bought a book at the airport: How to Deal with Annoying People; What to do When You Can't Avoid Them... hehehehh...... i saw the title and thought I NEED THIS BOOK!
Those interested in Freakonomics might also find 'Barbarians at the gate' by Burrough (dont know whether i have spelled it correctly) and John Helyar interesting. Its about the RJR Nabisco leveraged buyout.
Freakonomics YES! It was a good read. Guns, Germs, and Steel is something that can easily call for a good debate. Don't quite agree with all that Diamond talks about but then he has a point. Reading Collapse nowadays.
i agree with sabila - freakonomics is an awesome read. . .finished it a few weeks ago and loved it. i've heard 'blink' and 'the tipping point' by malcolm gladwell (sp?) are really good also, but haven't read them yet.
Given that it's the heyday of nonfiction, it certainly shouldn't be ignored here. The following are some great nf titles:
FREAKANOMICS by Steve Leavitt (I haven't read this just yet, but it's supposed to be great; will give it a twirl as soon as my brother's done with it);
1776 by David McCullough (how can one go wrong with David McCullough?);
SMASHED by Koren Zalickas (this book was a surprising success for us. It's a memoir of a binge drinker---she's 25 and started drinking when she was 12, I think. It debuted on the NYTimes bestseller list and just seemed to resonate with all sorts of people. It's beautifully written, which one wouldn't necessarily expect from a memoir about binge drinking amongst girls);
OH, THE GLORY OF IT ALL by Sean Wilsey (READ THIS! It's very entertaining and a NYTimes bestseller. A must for fans of McSweeney's);
COLLAPSE and GUNS GERMS AND STEEL by Jared Diamond (he's a brilliant writer of pop science; everyone must read him).
I think fiction just happens to be most people's favourite genre However, I've picked up a couple of biographies recently which I would HIGLY recommend, namely Leila Khaled's " My People Shall Live". If anyone else has read this, I would be very interested to hear their thoughts on the book. The book is a first hand account by a very well-known Palestinian revolutionary about the struggle for freedom in Israeli-occupied territory. The book itself is no longer in print, but old copies are available at extremely high prices. I would recommend checking at university libraries first!
