Non-halal clampdown
Dubai Municipality is vowing to investigate and fine supermarkets who put pork and non-halal beef and poultry on general sale in their shops.
The move follows an Emirates Today investigation that revealed a number of unlabelled haram products on supermarket shelves alongside halal products.
?This has happened and we will find the supermarkets that are stocking these items and take action,? said Khalid Shareef, head of Dubai Municipality Food Control Section. ?Regarding pork, we will be especially strict. Stores that have these items on their general shelves will be fined,? Shareef added.
The minimum fine for offering non-halal items without any warning to consumers is Dh4,000. Stores that repeat the offence face closure and the destruction of the suspect products.
?There is an instruction, rule and a procedure on how to sell non-halal items. Stores must follow that,? he added.
In the UAE all food imports that contain meat must carry a halal stamp, which is given after an Islamic authority in the origin country or a team from the General Secretariat of Municipalities verifies that the meat is being processed properly.
Non-halal items, which includes meat not slaughtered according to Islamic requirements and pork, must be sold in separate areas for non-Muslims.
Spinneys Supermarket, which specialises in a wide-range of imported foods, including many of those found without proper labelling, launched its own investigation following the Emirates Today story.
Jannie Holtzhausen, chief executive officer of Spinneys UAE, said: ?We?re on top of everything. Spinneys will be looking into any erroneous product placement.? He personally took the initiative to inspect his Dubai branches following the report.
