Not every thing is as it apears

Human beings are created from the dust of the earth; but do they resemble dust? Grapes come from vines; but do grapes look like vines? Does theft have the same shape as gallows? Does piety resemble eternal life? Nothing resembles its consequences. So the root of pain and torment is not evil.

-Rumi, "Masnavi"

Interesting...soo does that mean everything we take plesure in Is bad?
Also those who inflict pain on others...would not they be considered Evil?

I think hiddensmiles got it right, I am surprised she got a quite deep understanding of Rumi at such a young age. :)

thank you!

from what i get from Rumi in general is beautiful romance, faith, and mystery. With this particular poem, I get the sense if the root were examined very carefully, we might think differently of the action in question. :D

i think he may mean.. the root of pain and torment is love/ pleasure.. ie. it starts out as good, not evil, but it leads to something less good/ more destructive..

that's just the way i read it

hmmm...maybe it means to always think before declaring something to be what it is.

Grapes come from vines, but they don't look like vines. An action is coming from a 'bad' person, but is the action bad? IF the action itself is a bad one, what is its basis? If the basis is good...then is the action good?

"Nothing resembles its consequences. So the root of pain and torment is not evil."

If nothing resembles the end, we must look carefully at the root. Just my $0.02. :D
