OB/GYN rotation

salaams everyone, any advice on how to succeed in ob/gyn (survive is more like it)..... books, how to study, how to prepare, how to increase your confidence etc? the recommended text for us is the Becker textbook which i really like so far. im also using the A& L question book... what are good resources for improving ur skills on the wards (or even figuring out what the heck ur supposed to be doing...)

As a fourth year ob/gyn resident, I can tell you what we look for when we evaluate the medical students. Look interested, be aggressive, ask questions, we're not looking for you to become ob/gyns, just come on time, round on your patients and show some sort of work ethic!

Beckman seems to be the book that most medical students like to use. I also used the little pocket guide by CCPS (it was a maroon colored little pocket guide). Read in advance before you start the rotation. Cardinal movements of labor, the layers of the abdomen, etc. Blueprints is good and also helpful for Step 2 and 3. If you guys have any specific questions I'd be more than happy to answer them! rizwana

hehe i hear ya kfatema! it has gotten better. i have four more nights to go and hten ill be back to days which isnt too bad at the hospital im at - no calls and ur done by 5. so at least i got the busy part out of the way. yah, im pretty timid in the OR too :) the resident asked me to spong and i was so gentle she was laughing at me saying i didnt have to massage the uterus.... hehe.. i didnt mind cuz she is pretty nice. i think the first time u do something its natural to be a bit hesitant, by the 2nd or 3rd time ur a pro. lemme know how surgery goes, i have that in nov/dec. !

salams nurailaain, haha, i'm on surgery so i TOTALLY hear you 'bout feeling confused, not being able to understand what they say under their masks...aaauggh! i feel so helpless in the or - and i'm not one to be too aggressive either and i hate asking them to repeat things - but then i'm afraid of doing things wrong! anyway just wanted to drop a line to let u know that u are not alone...i feel the same way. but i
A, hopefully things will get better as time goes on....g'luck.

thanks for the advice guys! im hunting around for a cheap copy of blueprints cuz i already shelled out 35 for the beckman.... anywya, im really enjoying the rotation. Hum, so far ive had 6 deliveries and 3 Csections. each time i do a lil more and i think i show initiative and stuff... its hard for me cuz im not very aggressive and am always afraid of doing something wrong... and during procedures, the seniors tell you to do something really fast and half the time i cant understnad waht they just said cuz its fast plus with the mask.... hahah.... i dont think im built for surgery but i am enjoying the experience so far!

agree w/odidy on the blueprints book. simply written. but i know i didn't find it til the end of my rotation, so i used something else but i'm blanking on the rest... DO deliveries, and show enthusiasm as on every rotation, but doing is what u need to do on a rotation with procedures/surgery so predominant. i did some ob/gyn residency before i switched ... good luck!

i just bought the beckman text and dont really want to buy another book.... length is not an issue for me - will beckman suffice instead of blueprints?
