Online Photographs....

I've been using the Internet for over 10 years now and I remember the first online community I joined was ICQ which at that time was fantastic. I used to spend hours chatting to random people including up to all hours in the morning... (ok not much has changed since)...

Anyway I wanted to make a point about the use of photographs online. At the beginning very few people would put their photos online and were reluctant to swap photographs... nowadays, its very common to have a photo with one's profile or even swap photos on request. Naseeb is a good example of this...

So what's changed over the years? Are people more accepting of knowing who the other person looks like?

I like looking at peoples photos and it makes me remember the profile more easily too..

That's different, I probably wouldn't refuse to put my picture up, but it would definately have to be necessary before I did. Besides, if it's work related, not every tom, dick or harry will be looking at it. For something like naseeb, it's not necessary for my pic to be up and more likey more people I would rather not see my pic would see it. (not that I'm something to look at but rather I'm concerned about my own personal safety)

i threatened to have my company one taken a while ago wearing a paper bag on my head..

peacetwou, many people have work related web pages nowdays, with pics.. what if you rose to a prominent position at your company, will you refuse to have your pic taken for the company website?

I think having digital cameras has definitely made it easier. Otherwise you had to buy a scanner or find someone with a scanner to put pics up. And yes it is more acceptable today to have online friends. In college, I would be embarrassed to say that I have good friends online...people would think you're crazy or some kind of a social freak who can't make friends in real life. I figured it was online and i was normal, then there's gotta be other normal folks out there too :P

And I also like to be able to put a face to a name of someone I'm talking to. And I expect that from others, then I have to be willing to do the same.

yes like web cams, i also now have a digital camera so its a lot easier to have pictures posted. many years ago, i remember having to scan in every photo i wanted up online!

i've never known it to be dangerous to have my picture online but i can understand it from the point of view where someone comes from a close community and does not wish others to know that they are online.. especially if it is to meet someone special, cos of the taboo...

the more people who do it, the more acceptable it becomes.

I'll say! and i'm still not comfortable with posting my pic on the internet, especially on a dite like naseeb! I think it's still dangerous. it's one thing if you know the person or have met them but it's creepy if you haven't.

webcams are cheaper now...every nasir, abdul and mustafa can buy one ..

it's just more socially acceptable now. back then, you'd be a freak to have an online buddy whom you never met. now, it's a cool thing to have a bazillion friends...and still not have met em. hehe

You get noticed more if you have a picture up online. If you are looking to meet people and especially someone special, then a picture is a must. It is so common now that people aren't worried about putting their picture up.

I think that we are not as wary as we used to be online many years ago. when i first started out, i thought that it was full of nutcases.. yes there are still many nutcases but there are also many genuine people around too

I believe photography software has improved which enables us to look much better than we actually are and therefore we are more comfortable sharing our photos :P
