Our community in Western World

Do you think that generally Muslims in the western world are more educated than an average citizen in their country of residence?

Do you believe that based on our education and awareness, our community will achieve a more prominent status in western world?

I wanna take a trip to England to see. Also, just a side issue, about the athlete uniform bit ... I just thought about it for a bit, and ... well, that's really, really hard in some sports. It would be impossible, for example, for a man to wear pants or something while wrestling.

OK, I think everyone has made great points, but where do we start if we want to make an impact as muslims!? PERFECT your ISLAMIC Character. I"m not sure where I mentioned this before but basically, Islam spread throughout Indonesia due to the honestly of the arab merchants who used to go there for trade. If there was a defect in an item they were selling, the arabs would tell the indonesians. They were so impressed whith their honesty that they ended up accepting Islam.

Anyhow......to actually get back to the topic. Zuminella is so right! We definitly need more people in media and journalism.....give people a point of view other than the Yahud one. ALso, definitely more teachers so our muslim kids have someone to relate to and look upto in schools. More athletes, and the kind who actually try to follow Islam and don't have girlfriend on the side (or for females who dress in the skimpy uniforms) I mean, wouldn't it be great to see a female play tennis at wimbledon but with track pants on, LOL, and since athletes are revered in the west, if they are good athletes, you can bet that people will listen to what they have to say!....more people in politics, banking, basically all the kinds of jobs that jews take! Oh btw labs, I was in England for a bit and I was shocked to see the state that Muslims are in there, Especially the desi muslims. They are seriously worse than the white non-mulsims..it was very sad to see!

i believe that western born/raised muslims tend to be more educated. but that is not necessarily due to motivation and drive. we just have more opportunity here. i mean, you can complete all the way through high school for free whereas someone from indo-pak will have to pay for that education. however, i do not believe that our community will achieve a more prominent status in the western world YET. we have fundamentalist muslims who have given honest, hard-working muslims a bad reputation. then we have limited opportunities for immigrant populations (ie. the cab drivers of ny), and somehow we all get generalized into such categories. we need more political representation by OTHER MUSLIMS. and the biggest problem is that we need more agreement by muslims on critical topics. i mean, we can't even agree on one day for eid - how are we supposed to take a common stand on other issues?

I agree we are educated but know very little about the true meaning of Islam and how to integrate it into our everyday lives. We need to be more united and motivated to achieve a common goal for our ummah. Momo: I guess we can expect another speech! ;)

Just a quicky tho: I think what we need more than a *variety* of professions is poeple who are the best at things--or at least dammmm good. But it's gotta be dammmm good people *who have islam*, not just muslim names. Muslim names don't do anything for us. More later from me. Salaam.

Aaahh too much to say here. But too little time.

That's a good point, we need to enter into other professions. We have enough doctors, engineers, and MBAs, it's time for to have a few artists, media people, lawyers, and ofcourse Halal models.

Another thing that is impo is that we need to start going into more varied career fields. I mean we are all more educated but we are all concentrated in the same fields. All of us are doctors/engineers/business people. We need to get more people in journalism and government so that our society can have a voice.

Ammoori, UK Muslims don't have a single organisation like AC, UMMA, ISNA, CAIR, that does enough in terms of bringing us together and being able to speak for us.. I think Muslims here are in trouble.. we don't get on with each other, or with the white population (generally wanting to staying separate), we don't see a need to excel at work or in order to elevate our status as a community, we are self-centred and have no common spirit eg. as Jewish people do, so hardly ever help each other, and we don't see anything wrong with this.. to cap it all many of us are damn lazy when it comes to following our religion, preferring to pursue western norms while pretending to be 'cultural'... at least this is true for some of our generation........ our parents generation were busy settling and earning a living here.. but will we bother to do any better when we don't even have that excuse..

I think the western way of thinking is that one should make a distinction between religion and politics, religion and the state, religion and, well you name it, and its separated here in the west. BUt its EXACTLY the way MOMO said.....ISLAM IS A WAY OF LIFE!!!! from the moment we wake up to the moment we got to sleep our thoughts, ideas, actions should revolved around our deen.....and not the other way around. Masti.....what you said is soo right, but unfortunate. I know so many religious guys who, Mashallah are soo pious, and kind....etc......but in terms of trying to accomplish themselves in this life, they are darn lazy...don't have much money, not very educated etc...yet people seem to think its OK. Whatever ever happened to the time (our Golden Ages) when muslim cities were the centres of learning and knowledge! That's what we should aspire towards. I don't think its OK to just read the Quran all the time and do nothing worldly....Islam is a way of life..so live it! LOLZ....don't mind me......I get very passionate at times..you are all lucky you only have to read what I'm writing (or not read it, LOL)

Balance and moderation in everything is good. However, there are certain things in religion that are a must and are required. If you skip those things, you are being lazy and not moderate.

"So, in effect, it's about choosing one religious goal (the muslim community) over another (overtly supporting the practice of stoning)." Momo, I understand what you're trying to say, but at the same time, I still think it is compromising. If we are to have a 'Muslim' community, yet we don't support certain Islamic aspects, are we really Muslim? Or are you saying Muslim community as more of a cultural group...similar to how Jews are? I think the point I'm trying to make is that often we have an idealistic view of how Islam and American lifestyle can coexist, but really, we cannot implement Islam truly in a rigid literalist way and really be accepted by the American mainstream. On the other hand, I have been told that I am too much of an 'all or nothing' person and that SOMETHING is always better than NOTHING...one may apply this idea to Islam in America I suppose.

A rich man is often made ashamed of even if he prays one namaz a day so what does he do, the rich man avoids his religious community members. Sadly, in the muslim community being poor in wealth is considered good if the person's deen is steadfast.

Both extremes exist. Neither side willing to go the middle ground for fear of ridicule.

Wildchild, I don't know about the "compromising islamic things" part. Maybe I'm just being nitpicky with words, but I think it's an argument that a lot of people do seriously make against going towards powerful positions. See, "compromise" in something usually means not going all out with that thing. In religion, I see the real issue as one of "choosing the best route" rather than of "what we're willing to compromise." Lemme explain a lil. If one chooses, for example, to publicly support stoning for adultery, then one is arguably choosing against a powerful position. Choosing against a powerful position is the same as choosing against a powerful muslim community that can better implement allah's will on earth. So, in effect, it's about choosing one religious goal (the muslim community) over another (overtly supporting the practice of stoning). In other words, the issue is choosing what's *more important* within islam instead of *compromising* islam. In my mind, strengthening the world muslim community is more important than the practice of stoning for adultery. And each decision is based similarly. You knwo what I'm trying to say?
