Some over-acheivers are good as otherwise there would be all Indians and no chiefs. Too many over-acheivers are bad as then there would be all chiefs and no indians...

Good if intended for a meaningful purpose. Bad if pursued to satiate the ego.

over-achieving and being highly ambitious are very different yet a little similar. you can be highly ambitious and not get anywhere. ever. or you can be an over-achiever and surpass the goals your ambition allowed you to set. being an over-achiever to me means sticking with on the same trajectory as your original goals and not thinking of completely new goals. over-achieving also suggests perfectionism. how does an over-achiever know when to let go? when they've flogged that horse to death as it were...?

No wonder Einstein was genius. His theory of relativity can be applied to almost all the aspects of life. As in this case, both under/over achiever can be understood with respect to particular point of reference. This reference could be either region/race/nationality/age/sex, etc., and from these parameters evolves Goal. We can define over achiever as one who is able surpass the goals that he has set and vice versa for the underachiever. This boils down to how good you are in defining your own goals w.r.t to the environment around you, which leads to another clause as to how effective you are in identifying your own strengths and weaknesses. And by the way, I have bad habit of eluding away from the main course... yet again does not try to answer.

i think the two are related. i do not think it is circular. academia is circular. always chasing your own or someone else's tail. being ambitious and setting your sights high are not necessarily being an over-achiever, but to be an over achiever you must be highly ambitious. over achievers sometimes are not aware of their own limitations which sometimes can be a tremendous deterent and eventual obstacle to success.

Are over achieving and being highly ambitious two very different things? Over-achiever... to me that is some one who sets his/her standards very high and has the discipline to meet those standards in every thing he/she does. I don't see any thing wrong with that.

What is over-achiever.. define. Does the road end here, is it a exit or is it a circular loop.

its all situational. but how can it be wrong when it feels so right. why not go ahead and do something with our time on this earth so long as we dont forget about family. make sh@t happen, stir a lil trouble, piss some people off, change the world. i dare ya.

Being an over-achiever is ok as long as you know how to "play hard" just as well as "work hard." Having a good balance of the 2 is good. I have a friend like that. However, I think that women with young children should give more importance to being a good mother than on their careers (unless they are the main breadwinner in the family, then the career and motherhood should go hand in hand).

btw, i also think it has something to do with "elder child syndrome". and that really should be classified as a bonefide syndrome. they're pretty easy to spot

ta for the clarification styx. in that case i would take it as a bad thing even though it is a good thing to have achieved what you set out to to. but i'd ask the one commenting to quantify the 'over' part (i'm pedantic like that) - what separates over-achiever from simply achiever? it would also very much depend on who said it though. coming from someone i trust and value, i'd think there was something more behind it. coming from a colleague i'd take as a back-handed compliment

Who says it? any one you know. With respect to... every area of your life. I think being an over-achiever becomes, sort of, part of your personality and affects every area of your life, whether you want it to or not. Kind of like being a perfectionist.

depends who said it. and over-achieving with respect to what?
