PARADISE NOW

many of u must have heard of "paradise now" by now.

for a palstn movie to be produced by Warner this is a huge deal, especially a story that goes deep into what makes suicide bombers--what leads them to do it and how. i'll see it this wekeend. those who have, were left in awe. and the reviews have been nothing but high acclaim.

when was the last time u ever imagined a movie abt suicide bombers wouldbe shown NATIONWIDE (rather than the 3 or 4 indy theatres in NY & LA) ??

check out all the "explosive" reviews www.rottentomatoes.com

The movie is Palestine?s official nomination for the ?Best International Film? category in the Academy Awards.

MY PERSONAL REVIEW

"paradise now" is pretty effective--strong, well done, full of symbols and internal discussions that raise the pros & cons of suicide bombings. The role of the cute morrocan actress was important as she plays the role of a pali daughter of a bigtime fida2i (3azzam) but she grew up in france and morocco. So she brings valuable arguments to the characters by being an outsider (al la Edward said) as she lived abroad, while at the same time she cannot be dismissed as ?out of touch? since she is daughter of azzam. The symbols are many.. one of them is when they are having their pre-attack meal..and u notice right away that there are 13 of them sitting in a table --a la Jesus X's last supper. There is NO music whatsoever which makes the whole thing all the more poignant.

Though it?s a huge deal to have such a movie filmed in US and later to be filmed nationally?produced by Warner?I'm sure it went thru loads of script revisions to ?tone it down?. For instance, when one of the guys is reading his video-taped farewell he says ?suhyooniyya? twice but the word Zionism is nowhere to be found in the subtitles (they just label it as occupation).

Definitely a must-see...especially for our "nonarab" friends who will appreciate a special dosage of realism from back home !

Interestingly, Warner is doing another Mideast related movie-due Dec 9?called Syriana with clooney and damon so i guess theyre are capitalizing on the Mideast buzz. See link. syrianamovie.warnerbros.com done by the same who made TRAFFIC ! great stuf on US oil hegemony corruption etcc

adios

Bvsl: Its this: www.munichmovie.com It has to do w/ the 1972 Olympic games - the deaths of the 11 Israeli athletes & the subsequent hunt down of 11 Palestinians by a team.

Spielberg actually upset some Israelis over this because he deals with how its a 'mission of revenge' and the toll it begins to take as the hit list grows. In the preview there's one scene with a child that makes you wonder if this isn't going to be completely devoid of sympathy towards the Palestinians.

The reason I thought of the movie was how your review talked about how Paradise Now is a 'dosage of reality'. I'm concerned that Munich may obscure that reality, but who knows.

PS: I confess I only learned of Munich because it has Eric Bana in it...

meech, is that abt the terrorist cells in germany..covering mohammad ata & comp? well if it is abt al qaeda, then i can say that paradise now shws NO real religious explanation for carrying out suicide bombings. instead, its out of despair, desperation, revenge and the fukedup entourage

Yeah, give kudos to Edgar Bronfmann Jr. head of - Time/Warner/Vivendi/AOL - for taking a third stab on a movie about Muslims - Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World being the third.

A good Canadian Jew.

You guys should take another good look at the underlying themes of the Matrix trilogy to see what Bronfmann was trying to say about Zionism.
