Past?
Here's another interesting VE I found and nicked to discuss here... These are not my words.. I couldn't be bothered to change them!
I thought I'd start a new VE about this in response to a comment from another VE. I am really curious as to how pple can overlook the past, when it tells you a lot about their background, and this may impact their future practices. Certainly someone's social background and upbringing etc plays a big role into their future practices and habits may be hard to break. History may repeat itself.
In terms of the past history, it is a tough tough question about whether it matters or not, when considering someone for marriage. Sometimes past actions can reflect future actions. The question then comes up, as to what if they repented? Whether or not someone is truly repentful will only be known by Allah and the person. B/c I think most people would say they repented in order to pursue a new person. You may say that is btwn the person and Allah, but not so if you are going to marry that person and it may impact your relationship and family. For ex. people may say that they slept with many women but are repentful for each one, well then how come they slept with the next and the next one if each time they were repentful? unless of course they went thru some major turning point in their life after sleeping with all those women, then it is different. i have a tough time with pple saying they were always religiously conscious and practicing and then say that they've slept with many women. how do we reconcile that? When you're just starting to get to know someone and they say that they've been in a few intimate relationships -- perhaps that tells you how they've viewed women, or relationships or deen?
Tough one, b/c there are many variables and circumstances, and each person is different. But it comes down to the question of , doesn't the past concern you about the future? And also how can you assess whether someone has truly repented when it comes to marriage, as this can affect their future and you can't tell whether they are telling the truth sincerely?
