Petition: Save lives by urging media to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia

www.thepetitionsite.com

This petition is to urge the major media outlets around the world to provide coverage for earthquake in South Asia. With 3 million homeless and more than 75,000 injured in hard to reach area, this is the biggest relief operation the modern world has ever seen but has been completely ignored in the media. With harsh winter approaching, time is running out for the survivors. Media must play its role by providing extensive coverage of this tragedy.

There was a report last week that the UK is sending Chinook copters. Chinook's are amongst the biggest copters available and they can carry 44 people - that's it. 44.

And then there are problems about landing and even in areas where you can land the copters, it is complicated by people rushing to the copters making it v unsafe.

No wonder that logistically it is a nightmare and a half.

Well, in this situation, you could evacuate the most number of people with helicopters. There is no other viable option.

Yes, at the altitudes that we're talking about, heavy-lift helicopters can't really function. But a mix of heavy and light helicopters would work well.

It's not really a question of stablizing roads. In some situations, whole hillsides (with roads) have vanished. It's not so much a damaged road but more a vanished road.

The estimate of the area that is inaccessible went up from 20% to 30%. Approximately, 200,000 people are in that 30%.

Well, in all fairness, there wasn't necessarily a requirement for heavy road traffic. We're talking about villages of 200-300 people sometimes that didn't need to have heavy road traffic. And, it should be noted that building roads in that area is incredibly hard. During the building of the Karakoram Highway, hundreds (if not more) of army engineers perished.

Some other constraints of helicopters;

you cannot fly in heavy equipment
you cannot evacuate everyone in time before the winter?

You need road engineers to stabilize the valley roads. I'm pretty sure some roads won't be repaired in time before winter which leaves whole villages written off?

It seems that Kashmir was never designed for heavy road traffic because it's obvious the whole place was always neglected by previous governments.

i know we should be positive and thankful for all that the UN is doing but this stinks of short-term planning. how and why is it sooooooooooo expensive to fly 6 helicopters for a week...? and if they come back with good answers, then it really is a heart-sink situation. i wonder what will happen if this much money is needed - adn the world's pockets seem to have mysteriously emptied

How about free iftar dinners for the Jews in Brooklyn hosted by their neighbouring Pakistani Masjid for the remaining days in the Month of Ramadaan??? Can you say hot corned beef sandwiches???

I like it! Prepare a fact sheet of up to date info.

A lot of schmoozing, mingling and networking opportunities on how to co-ordinate aid to Kashmir.

Have at least one speaker who can speak English well and one's with an accent would be the comedy. Oh yeah, mention that some Pathans claim to be the descendents of the Lost Tribe of Israel.

It works like a charm everytime.

You're both very welcome. Please tell as many people as you can and visit saquake.org to see how else you can help (e.g., reaching out to politicians).

Collectively, we can make a difference. It's getting started that's hard.

Good question: A group of professional and non-profit organizations just formed an alliance called SAQUAKE.ORG. I belong to OPEN myself opensiliconvalley.com). The goal of the alliance is to work jointly on aid efforts. Our focus right now is on raising media and political awareness of the need to increase aid to the area. We just sent out a press release to the media yesterday asking for more helicopters. I can email it to you if you like.

Once the petition reaches critical mass, we will use it in our media awareness-raising efforts. It's going to take a little time, but I'm hoping for the positive effects of networks. :)
