Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy has received much hype in the UK. Although it was originally meant to be a series for children, Pullman's writing strongly appeals to the adult market too. Has anyone read "Northern Lights," "The Subtle Knife" or "The Amber Spyglass?" Are they worth reading?

I read the Northern Lights, and then saw a staged adaptation of the trilogy at a theatre in London. Besides the concept of the daemons, it didn't interest me much. To me they signify passion/id/humanness.

I heard that he also based the HDM on Dante's Inferno? But having read neither Paradise Lost nor the Inferno I dont know for certain...

I always considered the daemon to be the soul but then I know that that is the most simplistic and obvious. Not usre eabout conscience though cos some of the daemon's were pretty unpleasant and isnt a conscience always a good thing? Alter-ego - yes I guess that could fit.

How about a doppelganger? Something that is part of you but separate?

It is supposed to be a good children's book though I would agree that it is a bit 'advanced' for children. But then maybe they read it and look into it in an entirely different way? The way that he deals with the main characters is beautiful - especially the end.

Interesting definitions for "daemon." Does it basically refer to maturity/experience? Baba, here's a short bio for Pullman: www.philip-pullman.com

I used to like Tolkein when I was young and senile but now I have come to realize he just ripped off the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table!

Who's Pullman?

I heard that Pullman was hauled over the coals because some Christian leaders saw the trilogy as a diatribe on religion, when in reality he was simply attacking the dogma and fanaticism that has become associated with a few of its adherents... What do you guys think, after having read "His Dark Materials?"

Thanks Shazia... Totally agree about Harry Potter - I think it was a blatant rip-off of "The Worst Witch," which was a much better series in my opinion!

they are absolutely brilliant! it blows harry potter out of the water because it is original (personal view is that harry potter is a mixture of some really good books). is a much more intelligent and grown-up read.

read them!!!
