Places to go? websites?

I'm interested in learning some more spiritual practices within Islam and was told that based on my interests, I should look into Sufism for that. Does anyone know any GOOD (not new age - hippy places) in the northern CA area (near Berkeley) where i could go? Or a good website for information?

Thank you!

Thanks everyone. :-) Foxy - I'm looking into their women's meditation group they have every thursday and also a few events they have. Sounds like a good starting place maybe and is semi near me.

Salaam'o Alaikum Katie. Have you come across any books by Idries Shah? Available at any library - definitely worth the read. Start with the thinner (earlier) books, which comprise of short stories. Don't read too many at a time. They need to sink in for them to work on the heart..

This www.blaketashi.com to Blaketashi.com is a lighthearted romp in some rather serious matters. Highly recommended: Read the two Khidr interviews..

Hey Katie! I'm glad you asked this: The International Association of Sufism runs classes and workshops in the San Francisco Bay area :-) I think it's based in Novato? Go to www.ias.org

also, "tasawwuf.com" and "tasawwuf.org" are good links. the former is a link to the teachings of Shaykh Nuh Keller, while the latter is for Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad. Shaykh Nuh is from the Shadhili order, while Shaykh Zulfiqar is from the Naqshbandi order.

Masud Khan's website is a good place to start for some solid foundation-building type stuff. here is a link: www.masud.co.uk. Look up articles on "Tasawwuf" (Arabic for Sufism) and Islamic Spirituality. You will definitely fall in love with the writings of Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, aka T. J. Winters.

My friends in London went on a Sufi retreat where Kabir Helminski and his wife were present. Anyone know of any upcoming retreats in the North East USA?

I wish you could come visit the midwest! I think Boo_Radley knows of some places out there. To the second question, I personally don't think websites are of too much use in this area of learning -- until people have already experienced it in person at least -- because it is not something fully transmitted through the mind/intellect, but rather through the heart and inner intuition. So it is something that, to me at least, is 'felt' and distributed through interpersonal communication, and therefore must be learned in 'real life'. Poetry is good, though, because the message in poetry is often in the things that aren't said... that can't be put in words (as the Truth can never be fully put in words)... Rumi is a wonderful teacher mashAllah. Anyway, I already have typed out an introduction to a book on Sufism that I love, and will send.
