Merchants of Venice rates as one of my most favourite works by Shakespeare and the Al Pacino version is pretty good!

The globe is half a globe away from me, and all i have is my bike... Poor me. Kenneth Branagh directed the 1996 film adaptation "Hamlet." That was neat. I also enjoyed "The Importance of Being Earnest" with Rupert Everet and Colin Firth. "My Fair Lady" was killer, but not only 'cause of Hepburn, but for Rex Harrison playing Professor Higgins. Ever see "Ran"? It's Akira Kurosawa's filmic adaptation of Macbeth in feudal Japan (samurais and everything). That ruled. But maybe it's a guy thing...

For all Shakespeare/theatre fans out there the Globe has a list of its theatre events online. One to look out for is the midnight performance of Tempest..YES I did say MIDNIGHT..you may have heard about dinner by candlight but this is THEATRE BY CANDLELIGHT..LITERALLY !!

Sun 19 Jun 00:00 The Tempest

Even if you don't like Tempest its worth watching just for the sheer ambience !!

I haven't watched many adaptations...althought I think I've seen 3 adaptations of Pride and Prejudice (Laurence Olivier, Colin Firth and one other).

Then there is My Fair Lady (a.k.a Pygmalion by Shaw) - that was great with Audrey Hepburn.

More recently Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino..heard that was pretty good ..haven't seen it.

Forgot Ibsen's "A Doll's House" and Moliere's "Tartuffe." Oh, and heaven's to Betsy, "Hamlet." How could I've forgotten???

All nice choices! There are a few other plays, though, like Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, and some by Oscar Wilde such as The Importance of Being Earnest. However, plays were meant to be seen, not read! What are some of your favorite adaptations of plays to movies? This comment just evolved...
