Points of pride...

Many people often notice- typically non-Egyptians... that we're often a proud people- despite all of Egypt's problems, we're still a resilient and proud bunch.... is it our history? is it our culture? is it that we've made peace with Israel? our influence on Arab media?

What is it that makes us so proud to be Egyptian and keeps us going back, summer after summer???

Bilharzia?:) I'm back! Its been a lot since I logged on here so it?ll take me a while to get used to the new web site design and the massive amounts of advertisements cluttering the screen! Anyway, I get excited whenever Egypt is mentioned. I agree that *most of* Egyptians are proud of their heritage, but I have seen some who aren?t! In addition, it?ll be unfair to think that Egyptians are the only people proud of their heritage, every one is. Anyway, the reason, I think is mainly the location and the Nile. Both contributed to the making of Egyptian history and influence that we were once and still proud of. Family and friends have a huge effect as well, when they treat you well, etc. is when we love our heritage more. However, this brings me to an issue in stake. How are we going to continue to influence the region and lead it in the right direction, and how are we going to pass this pride along so our families to come would be as proud and happy of their heritage? Most of us here are 1st or 2nd generations, either we lived in Egypt or our immediate parents did and this is why we are so proud and we go there every year to visit family and friends. The other point is, with the deterioration of the Egyptian media in face of other Middle Eastern media we don?t have any influence on the mind set of the people of the Middle East as we used to. The fall of our firm stands against the world powers, and the west specifically, demanding fairness have made people around the region loose trust in our leadership. This is because we have leadership with no ideals or principles. I had differences with the strategy of Sadat and huge differences with Nasser?s, but both had principles and goals and were able to lead the country and the region for various purposes. Mubarak is neither influential nor idol with no ideal to reach for, hence the deterioration of our region leadership. We need leaders with principles, goals, and ambitious to reach for them for the good of the country and the region so that other nations can follow them. I think this is how we will continue to retain our position and be always proud of our heritage. Thanks for reading. --Moustafa

something about Egypt. it has mentioned in the Quran, also the prophet muhammad: has said 'owsekom be ahl missr khayran ...." (transaltion: take care of the people of Egypt). also the famous word that says " Whoever drink from the Nile, must drink from it again" . and yes it much has to do with the Ancient egyptian history that we feel pround to tell people we are egyptians. Also the president Sadat is respected in the western world. plus many foreginers visit Egypt every year, especially from Europe.

I think its the strong tie in the the land and the strong sense of community and comradery.... How much of it is tied to getting the Sinai back from Israel?

The thing is though Morsy- most people associate Egypt with the Pharonic times.... not much of that is relevant to current Egypt or Egyptians.... I doubt we could build a pyramid again... or if we made a Sphinx it would have a Mercedes symbol on it and a Vodaphone shirt on.... not to mention the latest nokia carved into its paw.

proud of our soccer team! too funny :# why are we so proud of being Egyptian? Personally, I think it's the food. history is another huge one too. We tend to look for pride in areas where most recognized by outsiders. When you tell a non Egyptian that you are from Egypt, first thing that hits him/her is the great history of our culture.
