progressive islam?

so, many of us have 'progressive' as our distinctions on our profiles. some have traditional and some have liberal (god forbid! get over it). if you have progressive, it probably meant that you answered that you pray less than 5 times a day OR that you think that dancing is OK in the presence of those of the opposite sex, but not if you miss some days of fast during ramadan or if you eat non-zabihah. while, i dont understand naseeb.com's random psychological classification, id like to know how you classify yourself? i dont mean to pry and if i am, please answer this: what is 'progressive islam'? is it dr. wadud acting as imam in nyc? is it dating? is it hanging out with members of the opposite sex without mahram?

discuss. please.

how about "see their answers to particular queries" feature. more than a few canned questions. and then, let me come to my own conclusions instead of a random admin somewhere calling me 'liberal'.

is really not so much the responses as it is the designations. you can have a list of queries, and responses to boot. but currently, they have a few questions and THEY label me as progressive/traditional/liberal. furthermore, there is the option to hide the results, so its not like i know if she keeps halal or not but that. so that wouldnt be 'helpful' would it? furthermore, this is more than a dating/shaadi site, i hope. and then lastingly, i guess im just perturbed by pre-filled responses to things. id like to make my own questions, answer then how i want and with my own words.

i can understand the reasoning behind the classification. if there were no place to identify how strict a muslim you are, it would lead to disappointment when one partner is interested in dating and other is far more conservative than that. this offers insight into a person's personality, rather than leaving it up to guessing. and it's easier to read someone's answers to these questions than asking, "well, do you keep halal?" a fifth question they should have would be "do you date?".

haha, lets just hope i wouldnt be 2.3 muslim!!!

you should be able to disable the displaying of your selections by editing your profile, anyone who is interested.

this kind of reminds me of my status as a 'conservative' in the political arena. while im mod/con, i still dont support the death penalty (at least how it has been implemented in this country historically. it is disturbing and before everyone jumps on the boat of how it is the 'best' solution to hard criminals, mistakes in death are not what i consider 'best'). however, a good portion of what the cons stand for, i support. therefore, i can understand such classification. but take 'progressives'. but does this category stand for? thus far, it means not reading our REQUIRED namaz/salat or dancing. but beyond that, i havent a clue. and liberal next to islam just doesnt go down right with me.

anywho, just thought i would vent a bit today. the list has been a bit dead.

yeah, i dont know what naseeb.com baffoons were thinking. sorry to be so crass. but progressive is not what comes to mind when i hear 'tries to prayer at least once a day'. first off, prayer of all matters is a personal obligation to Allah and not a world-wide joint venture, as it were. secondly, i always had a hard time reconciling those who only eat zabihah but state that they pray once a week being in the same 'category'.

progressive to me implies, like you said, formulation of new rules that arent as 'oppressive'. so if i miss a day of prayers, i am doing something to 'release myself from oppression'? interesting.

anyway, i also never could understand 'liberal muslims' category either. what a way to label a brother/sister. i dunno; the word liberal just gives me the heebie-jeebies.

i guess i would be at less odds with the system had there been some kid of technique to it. or maybe i just dont like 5 or so answers to random questions 'defining me'.

i'ma libertarian, though i consider myself orthodox muslim and something of a fundementalist, in it's historical, rather than, current context.
i don't know if Doc Wudud's actions are "progressive" islam, that would depend on what is meant by progressive, heretical, unorthrodox, reformist, new age, there are alot of different things you can call her (in the interest of full disclosure i support her ideas and wish her luck)

I don't know what the deal is with naseeb's administrators though. it is an odd test.

if dating and dancing is progressive islam, then maybe "permissive islam" is a more accurate term. it is more "non-adherance" to traditional schools of thought, rather than a formulation of a new one. I would think Progressive islam would not be just a matter of not following rules, i often don't follow rules, but i don't think that is a stand alone qualifier for "progressive".

Wouldn't progressive imply the development of a new school of thought? rather than the "missing of a few prayers?"
