Push vs. Pull

hmmm... I do like to lift free-weights off & on.

My general priorities are strength & tone. I like to be athletically well-rounded as opposed to just gym-trained, per se'.

Most of the time, I do my exercises on alternate days in which one day is for exercises that are "push" motion (extensors); a day rest; then exercises that are "pull" motion (flexors).

Any suggestions to mixing things up?

You are Very welcome Effie,

What Looks Good is a Balanced & Symmetrical Physique. Calf Development is necesary because it provides Solid Foundation for a Symmetrical Physique. Calves are tough and carry your bodyweight throughout the day and rarely fatigue, so you must train them very hard in order for them to respond. I train them twice a week because I want more muscles and development , If you feel like yours are Great you can train them once a week. Women do get lot of Calf workout since they wear high heals, though very few people including Bodybuilders have great calves, Which is ahy you see them wearing sweat pants nor shorts. Shoulders are very important muscle group , That is the first thing that usually get noticed on a man or woman. Shoulders also provide support for the rest of upper body so it is important to train them very hard and from every angle.

More questions please.

oh thanx z!--your insight is really helpful-- you seem to do calves twice..is there a reason for that? i feel like my calves are an ok size/tone the way they are, do you think it's still necessary for me to do calves..can i just skip them and do legs, chest, abs, and arms?...and also--i hate doing shoulders--do i HAVE to do them?

Effie, exactly what Zbrehman stated: 'push' exercises done exclusively in a workout mazimize those groups of muscles, and likewise for 'pull' exercises. Z, thanks for the sample-workout, very similar to mine! I was doing biceps on the back/neck day & triceps on the chest day; no wonder I didn't the most out of it as I was doing too many exercises & the muscles just faded! DOH! I look fwd to this lil' tweak of my routine.

It all Depends what your Fitness goals. I prefer machines over Free Weight specially hen you trying to get lean , however when trying to put on more Size (Mass), you do need to use Free weight. Regarding push vs Pull. Training Opposite Muscle groups together same will help Both Muscle groups get stronger. I would recommend traing Large muscles by itself , if anything you should rest a day between 2 push movement but not between push and pull movement. Below is a sample training 5 day per week trainingRoutine
Day one = Back , Calves
Day two= Chest , Abs
Day 3 = Legs
Day 4 = OFF
Day 5 = Arms (biceps & triceps), Calves
Day 6 = Shoulders, Abs
Day 7 = OFF

hm.. well i dunno if this is at all insightful..but i generally split it up upper body/lower body, or major muscles/minor muscles..is there a specific reason you split yours up the way you do?
