question about fat

Well, the dilema was, my brother, hes 14 years old and weighs 13.5stones (190lb). (hes about 5'4)

Now obviously the way these crazy girls are these days, i thought, dam, if he stays like that he wont even get laid without paying.

so 2 days ago i made him join the gym. I dont know much about fat as thankfully I have never been fat, but i am concerned about him.

His routine, as started is;
- light weights 10mins
- tredmill 30mins (gradually to 45 mins)
- sauna for 15 mins

every day. 7 days a week.

with a minimum carb/fat diet.

if anyone has any suggestions as to anything else i should add i would be greatfull. Also i have heard that retaining heat while doing cardio encourages more fat burning. is that true if so why.

Wasim,

For someone his age, I would really stay away from minimum carb/fat diets; go for a balanced diet where he can continue eating like that for a life time. A lot of times when you cut too many carbs, once you start eating them again your body stores fat much quicker.

I don't think the suana will have much of a long term effect. Make sure hes drinking 1 ounce of cold water per pound. If he drinks enough water it will push out the extra water weight.

Start him off with warm up bycicling, he should hit the weights a little longer. If he's never worked out too much the 30 mins of running might be too drastic.

sorry I made modifications to the original routine, hence i was asking for opinions. i just wanted to get rid of the water retention through sauna. i think 3 days on and off sauna should be ok.. or ill cut it to 2 days. done sue me.

Actually as fun as it is, I'd recommend NOT doing the sauna every day. Ala "Too much of a good thing is not good for you" in fact, he could seriously get skin issues. If it's his "treat" after a work out, I'd recommend letting him pick something else to do for those 15 mins OR as Sk said, he really should be streaching out to prevent injury.

kewl. thanks for the comments. I usually take one day off a week too, so we go 6 days.

PT's usually talk crrap anyway. I made him a diet plan myself.

Sk1975, i dont want him to lift too many weights because hes only 14 and i dont want to limit natural growth.

its actually working quite good because he has lost 8lbs since i he started 7 days ago.

Sometimes he jumps off the tredmill after 20 minutes and says hes tired, at which point i slap his asss and push him back on at a lower speed and make him complete his 40 minutes.

I guess its sorta working.

progressively make the weights more intense. in order to change body composition, he needs not only to reduce his body fat, but to increase his muscle. also, he doesn't need to sit in the sauna for 15 min every day. it's nice and relaxing, but need not be a part of his fitness routine. instead, add about 10-15 min of stretching at the end of his workout (and a good warm-up at the beginning).

He needs to take a break--do six days a week because his body needs some time to rest.

Also see if you can make at appointment with the nutritionist at the gym. (usually one free session) to put him on an eating plan. You can also get him a trainer to give him motivation initially.
