questioning Hadith

Have people read Shakir's article "Another nail in the coffin of Hadith" on Naseeb Vibes? If not, it's at www3.naseeb.com

The issue of Hadith is an interesting one which I've been meaning to write about for years but never got around to. Firstly there's the fact that the majority of modern scholarship is very critical about the traditional "science" of determining Hadith authenticity through chain of transmission (isnad) evaluation. Questioning Hadith is also a good strategy for reform, as the Qur'an is in many ways much more open to fresh interpretation in a modern context than the Hadith.

Unfortunately, the Hadith literature is big and complex enough that it practically requires a PhD dissertation to treat it properly. Oh well, maybe someday =)

I must say that was an excellent article written brilliantly. I did read it in detail more than once and of course it was not surprising that it did created a stir among some...

An edited version of Bukhari/Muslim is essential for the future. Even FR set that out as a task but left it to future generations expecting a natural evolution in thinking...but it has not happened yet. Maybe the outcome of such an exercise will be a book that both traditionalists and progressives can accept...but who will bell the cat?

I agree with you completely that the traditional fetishizing of hadith transmitters makes the subject absurdly complicated without adding any useful knowledge. Sometimes I think a good long-term project would be to go through Bukhari, Muslim and the Muwatta in order to distill a small group of "reliable" hadith. They would probably wind up being just a small book.

Sorry for accessing this late, was out of town. 2 comments to get started:

1. Mansukh (superceded) verses of the Quran lay a precedent for the supercedation of hadith (if one accepts hadith as a source of law in the first place)

2. Hadith literature is being made into a PhD issue so that most people get dissuaded and leave it to "experts"
