Quran Tafsir: 2:75-2:82
Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful
Ayahs 62-74
Do you then hope that they would believe in you? While a party from among them indeed used to hear the word of All?h, then altered it after they had understood it, and they know (this) (75).
And when they meet those who believe they say: "We believe"; and when they are alone one with another they say: "Do you talk to them of what All?h has disclosed to you that they may argue with you by this before your Lord? Do you not then understand?" (76).
What! Do they not know that All?h knows what they conceal and what they proclaim? (77).
And there are among them illit?erates who know not the Book but only lies, and they do but conjecture (78).
Woe, then, to those who write the book with their hands and then say: "This is from All?h ", so that they may sell it for a small price; therefore woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn (thereby) (79).
And they say: "Fire shall not touch us but for a few days. " Say: "Have you taken a promise from All?h, then All?h will never fail to keep His promise, or do you speak against All?h what you do not know?" (80).
Yea! whoever earns evil and his sins beset him on every side, these are the inmates of the Fire; in it they shall abide (81).
And (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the garden; in it they shall abide (82)

The following verses are addressed to the new converts of Medina. During the time of the Prophet, the Jews were the most learned of the residents of Medina and the illiterate pagan Arabs looked up to them and admired them. They had heard of Jewish prophecies foretelling the coming of a new messenger.
Thus when they heard of Prophet Muhammad and his message from Allah and converted, they naturally assumed that the Jews would be amongst the first to embrace Islam. However, the fact that they didn't, caused some of the new converts to have doubts as to if the message of Allah as told by Prophet Muhammad was in fact the truth or not.
These verses address the doubts by highlighting that the Jews recognized Prophet Muhammad was the same man as foretold in their scriptures, yet due to fear of losing their position of spiritual authorit, their leaders chose to hide the truth and manipulate the facts. Resulting in many lies being told.

Do you then hope that they would believe in you? While a party from among them indeed used to hear the word of All?h, then altered it after they had understood it, and they know (this) (75).
The believers are advised to be on the lookout for alterations made by the Jews from the original message of Allah that was revealed to them. They changed the original rulings in order to gain material benefit in this world.

And when they meet those who believe they say: "We believe"; and when they are alone one with another they say: "Do you talk to them of what All?h has disclosed to you that they may argue with you by this before your Lord? Do you not then understand?" (76).
The methods of their hypocrisy are exposed again. First time it was stated in Verses 2:14. I.e when in the company of the Muslims they state that they believe in the Messenger of Allah, yet afterwards when the Jewish religious leaders are on their own they admonish one another for letting the truth from their teachings slip into the ears of the Muslims, lest these words be used to weaken their position of spiritual authority.
This shows the materialistic outlook of the religious leaders. That they will commit lies and deceit to further their gains in this world. This behavior is not exclusive to Jewish spiritual leaders, these verses are in fact also a warning for Muslims to watch amongst their own leaders who would twist the original message of Islam to further their material gains in this world.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
What! Do they not know that All?h knows what they conceal and what they proclaim? (77).
Allah chastises such attempts at surpressing the truth. Does the mere human really think he can prevent Allah from allowing the Truth to prevail? Allah has full knowledge of their deception and they will be brought to justice.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
And there are among them illit?erates who know not the Book but only lies, and they do but conjecture (78).
Aside from the religious leaders who knew the validity of the true message of Islam, there were the common Jews who are not aware of the details of their faith. Even if they are literate and able to read the scriptures, they choose to selectively read into them that what was of benefit to them. This was again using religon and its teachings to wrongfully further ones materialistic aspirations in this world.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
Woe, then, to those who write the book with their hands and then say: "This is from All?h ", so that they may sell it for a small price; therefore woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn (thereby) (79).
A severe punishment will eventually befall those who willfully commit deceit by composing religous rulings from their own imagination and attributing them to Allah.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
And they say: "Fire shall not touch us but for a few days. " Say: "Have you taken a promise from All?h, then All?h will never fail to keep His promise, or do you speak against All?h what you do not know?" (80).
There was a common belief amongst the Jews that they were exempt from the Hell fire and even if they were to receive punishment, it would be mild and only for a few days. Allah challenges them to prove where such a promise was made by Him.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
Yea! whoever earns evil and his sins beset him on every side, these are the inmates of the Fire; in it they shall abide (81).
The above activities are described as actively seeking out and earning evil. The results of such efforts will be the hellfire.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
And (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the garden; in it they shall abide (82)
In comparison, those who do not commit such acts of hypocrisy. I.e follow the message of Allah sincerely and with the best of intentions will be rewarded with paradise.
