Quran Tafsir: 2:83-2:93

Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful
Ayahs 83-93
And when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel: "You shall not worship (any) but All?h and (you shall do) good to (your) parents, and to the near of kin and to the orphans and the needy, and speak to men good (words) and keep up prayer and pay the zak?t. " Then you turned back except a few of you and (now too) you turn aside (83 ).

And when We made a covenant with you: "You shall not shed your blood and you shall not turn your people out of your cities;" then you gave a promise while you witnessed (84).

Yet you it is who slay your people and turn a party from among you out of their homes, backing each other up against them unlawfully and exceeding the limits; and if they should come to you as captives, you would ransom them - while their very turning out was unlawful for you. Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? What then is the reward of such among you as do this but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall be sent back to the most grievous chastise?ment, and All?h is not at all heedless of what you do (85).

These are they who have bought the life of this world for the hereafter, so their chastisement shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped (86).

And most certainly We gave Mus? the Book and We sent apostles after him one after another; and We gave `Is?, the son of Maryam, clear evidence and strengthened him with the holy spirit. What! whenever then an apostle came to you with that which your souls did not desire, you were insolent, so you called some (of them) liars and some you slew (87).

And they say: "Our hearts are covered." Nay, All?h has cursed them on account of their unbelief- so little it is that they believe (88).

And when there came to them a Book from All?h verifying that which they have, and aforetime they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved, but when there came to them that which they did recognize, they disbelieved in him; so All?h's curse is on the unbelievers (89).

Evil is that for which they sold their souls - that they should deny what All?h has revealed, out of envy that All?h should send down of His grace on whomsoever of His servants He pleases; so they returned with wrath upon wrath, and there is a disgraceful punishment for the unbelievers (90).

And when it is said to them, "Believe in what All?h has revealed, " they say: "We believe in that which was revealed to us;" and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: "Why then did you kill All?h's prophets before if you were indeed believers?" (91) .

And most certainly Mus? came to you with clear evi?dence, then you took the calf (for a god) in his absence and you were unjust (92).

And (remember) when We made a covenant with you and raised the mountain over you: "Take hold of what We have given you with firmness and listen (to Our words)". They said: "We hear and disobey. " And they were made to imbibe (the love of) the calf into their hearts on account of their unbelief. Say: "Evil is that which your belief bids you if you are believers" (93).

Continuing on with the Jews being directly addressed in the Quran, the hypocrisy of their beliefs is being repeatedly exposed in these verses. The Israelites consistently made promises with Allah that they subsequently broke. They refused to recognize legitamite messengers that came after Moses and in fact were responsible for killing these apostles.

The Jews made a covenant (promise/contract) with Allah to only worship Allah, treat one's parents with kindness and then the orphans and those who are destitute.
They were enjoined to only say what is good to others, and practice regular prayer and charity. Yet in the end, most did not follow the covenant.

The terms of the covenant are also lessons for Muslims on what is important-Worship of one God, treatment of parents with respect. It is significant that the next group of people to be highlighted are relatives and the orphans (orphan being those that lost a father, not a mother). Then in terms of priority are the other destitute.

Another covenant that was made was to not kill one's fellow believers or expell them from their homes/cities. However differing clans of Jews in Medina made seperate alliances with the Arab tribes of Aus and Khazraj. And when Aus and Khazraj went to battle with one another, the Jews aligned with Aus went to battle against the Jews aligned with Khazraj. Not only did they kill , but they also held for ransom any Jews caught as prisoners. They justified the ransom by stating that the Torah allows ransom for prisoners of war, however they didn't follow the section which stated that taking fellow Jews as prisoners of war is prohibited. They chose to follow one aspect of the religon and ignore the other.

Thus the Jews broke this covenant as well, and they are warned that punishment awaits them in the hereafter for such behavior. The punishement will not be lightened and no one will be there to help them against the wrath of Allah.

This verse is a warning to Muslims as well about punishement for such picking and chosing tenants of Islam to suit one's worldy gains and needs.

Hz Musa was given the Torah, several apostles were sent after him. Hz Isa (Jesus) is mentioned for the first time as the son of Mary. Prophet Isa was given clear evidence of his messenger status and blessed with the holy spirit. This will be discussed in more detail in Surah 3 (Al-Imran). The Jews rejected these prophets and after accusing them of being liars, killed some of them.

----------------------------------- -----------------------
And they say: "Our hearts are covered." Nay, All?h has cursed them on account of their unbelief- so little it is that they believe (88).
The Jews when presented with the truth stated that their hearts are covered, i.e veiled against the words of Prophet Muhammad. Allah then reaffirms their unbelief and states they are cursed.

----------------------------------- -----------------------
And when there came to them a Book from All?h verifying that which they have, and aforetime they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved, but when there came to them that which they did recognize, they disbelieved in him; so All?h's curse is on the unbelievers (89).
The Jews knew of a Messenger fortold in their books the coming of the Prophet, and when the Jews went to battle with the pagans they prayed for victory by the right of the Prophet. Yet when Prophet Muhammad came with the Message to them, they recognized he was the one and then deliberately chose to disbelieve.

----------------------------------- -----------------------

Evil is that for which they sold their souls - that they should deny what All?h has revealed, out of envy that All?h should send down of His grace on whomsoever of His servants He pleases; so they returned with wrath upon wrath, and there is a disgraceful punishment for the unbelievers (90).

The Jews rejected Prophet Muhammad because of envy stemming from the fact that he was not from the Israelite tribes. They sold their souls for the sake of this envy (referred to as evil) and face a double wrath from Allah-one for rejecting the teachings of the Torah and then for rejecting the teachings of the Quran.
----------------------------------- -----------------------
And when it is said to them, "Believe in what All?h has revealed, " they say: "We believe in that which was revealed to us;" and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: "Why then did you kill All?h's prophets before if you were indeed believers?" (91) .
When enjoined to believe in the Message of Allah through Prophet Muhammad, the Jews responded by stating they they will only believe in what was revealed to them. Yet they didn't even believe in that, as Allah responds to such statements by asking why did they then kill Allah's prophets when what was clearly revealed to them stated that this was forbidden?

----------------------------------- -----------------------
And most certainly Mus? came to you with clear evi?dence, then you took the calf (for a god) in his absence and you were unjust (92).

Musa came with clear proof of Allah's message, yet as soon as he left for 40 days to Mt Tur, the Jews abandoned his teachings and started to worship a golden calf. So they heard the message and made a covenant with Allah, yet the eventual response was that they heard Allah's message and then disobeyed.

A metaphor is given by the word imbibe (drink) such that not only did they just belief in the worship of the calf in defiance of the teachings of Allah, but rather the level of their disbelief is such that their hearts imbibed the love of the calf into their hearts. Such is the level of their unbelief that their heart imbibes the love to the core of their soul. Allah states that it is infact Evil that bids them to believe such things while stating to be believers.
