Ramzan Ka Dastarkhan ~ Hydro Style

An awesome read for Hydros all over the world:

Ramzan Ka Dastarkhan

The time has come. I'm sure someone reading this is already making their 'kya toh bhi hunga' face. It is not the yearly daawat that aunty gives right before someone she knows is getting married so she could be invited to it....nor it is the once a year Marshall Fields red tag sale. I'm talking beyond all that, and that is....the holy month of Ramzan. I will save the time to explain what Ramadan is about, since we all know what it is. But what makes Ramzan more unique, not just by the sole fact that it is a month of mercy sent to us from Allah Almighty.....but the fact that hyderabadies truly dil-aur-roop sey make Ramzan more enjoyable.

The typical 'subha ki daant' is the best. Subha Subha Sayri kay time shuru hota alarm ki clock...oh wait, that's just my mummy yelling 'UTooooooooow tum sob. Har subha mereyku chillanay lagaatay, raat mey kaiku toh bhi sotay deyr tak.....online chat kartay rehtay'. And of course if the potta/pottis do not wake up....the classic way of waking up people is the infamous 'paani ka chinak-na'. I hate that actually. Worst thing I want is water on my face on a nice cool sleep. Now if my mom is not able to wake up the 'sust aur naala-yak potta pottis', she then goes to the man of the house. Now....with my experiences, that is really dependent on his mood (dad?s mood).

Agar unku subha mey mood acha hai toh he would probably shout a little from the kitchen 'utow tum loga....mummy deykho acha keema aur paratay banai deykho'. Now....that is normally not the case with my dad actually, unow toh shuru hojatay if my mom is yelling for more then 2 mins.....bawa saab seedha kamray mey aatay aur blanket ku kheech kay AIK kheech kay bolta 'Dalinder pottay...tu utt....naoker nai hai tumaray amma khana pakanay kayliyai....jaldi sey utow aur khaana khao'. Well, this is only if he is extremely upset. Classic is when we hear 'Subha mey khao acha sahoor mey....kaisay haddi chamra hojaray deykhow....aankhow kay neechay halkay aajara tumaray....shakal mey paani tak nai raha aur dood peeo! Rang kam hora'. Now, that is just
classic and I have hear that about 100 times....from when I was 10 years old in Jeddah to....24 in Chicago. Maa ki kirkiri...rang meyra kaisa khuliga dood peekay? Up till now I tried Indian bhais ka dood, Saudi ki camel ka dood and even the steroid filled bhais from Wisconsin...meyra rang waisay ka waiseech hai. Don?t even know why Hyderabadi aamma bawa think dood sey rang khul ta. Khair that is another topic for another day.

Couple of other things that are classic is obviously the Iftaar. Sayri mey toh woich khaatay joe raat ka banawa rehta.....wether it is bagaray baigan ya mirchi ka salan from two days ago, which by the way tastes better as it gets old (woh mirchi ka khatta nikalta). I normally end up eating cereal...subha subha nai chalta desi khaana.....

Iftaar with the close knit family is probably one of the most memorable memories from my childhood. I still get to experience it, but not as much....with most of the siblings married off and with work, it?s really tough to break fast with your family. But khair....woh toh purrani baat hai. Iftaaris would just not be the same without the amma ki mehnat. Seriously, a Hyderabadi mom in general LOVE to make sure their kids/husband gets the best food every time. Even if they are completely tired or don?t feel like it, they still end up making a feast. Obviously the family helps out and does not take advantage of mom-ki-mohabbat. We should never. Helping out with the khanaa-pakana is a trait Hyderabadi men are known for (or not....depends on who you ask.
Usually the auntys say their husbands dont do anything in the kitchen except burp). khair.....classic hyderabadi iftaar dishes are (not in the order of preferance) -

Daal (the yellow boiled daal with leembu ka paani, kotmeer. I forget what the real name of it is...)

Meetay bhajiyai

Dhai baray (beysan kay) with hari mirchi ki chutney and of course the khaari puffs crushed on it

Mirchi kay bhajiye (the more khatta in the mirchi...the better it is)

Ghoray kay chanay

Pakorays

Aalu kay bhajiye

Palak kay bhaijiye

And then we also have the infamous Rooh-Afza. Usually...this is an iffy matter, not everyone likes it. I personally like it, only with milk....with water; it tastes a bit 'weird'. Khair....iftaar Hyderabadis ki is always oily and always refreshingly hot and khatti.

Naturally, Maghrib ki namaaz kay baad khana is not served....since everyone is just stuffed from the iftaar. A lot of times, ghar kay loag ate half an hour before heading out for isha/taraveeh namaz.

I also like the fact that there are khandaani iftaar dawats every weekend almost and it truly makes Ramzan even more enjoyable! From the classic 'chachi kay haat ki lassi' to 'mummani ki kharab dhai baray maash kay bhajiyai' (yes....Hyderabadis love to name people with their good/bad recipes). Some of the other important 'iftaaris' are when little kids who fast for the very first time, there is normally a BIG iftaar daawat thrown by the kids parents. These iftaars are just amazing because it helps encourage the young ones to fast and inviting everyone to iftaar just helps kids feel special!

In the end, Ramzan (all jokes aside) is a month we all try to take advantage of as much as we can. And it helps us build our character and we all try to carry out the same habits we pick up from Ramadan and stick on to it throughout the year. I will end with a couple of points about Ramadan, it is something I came across from someone a couple of months ago and I hope you like it -

RAMZAN CHECKLIST

1. Ask Allah to enable you to reach Ramadan and to get the most out of it as the Salaf used to do.

2. Intend to fast every day with Iman and pure intention seeking the reward from Allah alone. The Prophet said, 'Whoever fasts in Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven".

3. Read the whole Qur'an at least once as the Prophet did.

4. Have Suhoor as the Prophet said, 'Have Suhoor because it is blessed".

5. Make
Du'a during the fast because the Prophet said that three people's supplication is not rejected one of them is the fasting person. Ask for the good of this life and the next for yourself, your family and Muslims in general.

6. Make Dua before opening the fast. The Prophet said, 'The fasting person has a supplication that is answered when he opens his fast".

7. Give Sadaqah and be good to people. The Prophet was the most generous of people and he was most generous in Ramadan.

8. Avoid anything that diminishes the fast such as, lying, backbiting, cheating, getting angry. The Prophet said, 'Whoever does not abandon false words and deeds Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink".

9. Do not eat too much after
Iftar.

10. Ask for forgiveness since this is the month Allah frees people from the fire.

11. Pray At-Tarawih with Khushoo. If you pray in the Masjid complete the Salah with the Imam. If you pray at home prolong the Salah as long as you can. The Prophet said, 'Whoever prays during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven".

12. Feed the poor and invite others for Iftar. The Prophet said, 'Whoever gives Iftar to someone fasting he will have the same reward without decreasing the reward of the person fasting".

13. Try harder the last ten nights especially the odd nights. The prophet would strive in Ramadan more than he would in any other month and more so in the last ten days.

14. Say this Dua in the nights that Laitul-Qadr is likely to fall on: Allhumma innaka afuwun tuhibbul-afwa fa'fu anni (O Allah you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me).

15. Ask Allah to accept all your good actions during this month.

With all that said. Ramadan truly brings families together, especially in the fast paced society we live in. It helps us rejuvenate our soul and keeps us all in-check. I personally have a lot of things to 'work' on.....and I hope to become a better person each time I pass through the holy month of Ramadan.

Hope you all, Hyderabadis and non-Hyderabadis alike have a very memorable Ramadan month and Insha'Allah please take care of your health and of course keep all the Muslims in your prayers.
