Salaam

Instead of going into explanations or summaries, I figure I'll just post an incomplete sample list of my recent reads the last few months and whether I'd recommend them or not. I'd like to see other folks' reads as well, I'm always looking for something new to discover:

Madras on Rainy Days- Samina Ali (good)

The Bookseller of Kabul - good

The Tao of Islam- Sachiko Murata (excellent, but very densly packed with info.)

A People's History of the US- Zinn (good, alternative perspective from what's normally taught, etc)

Middle Earth: Poems by Henri Cole (excellent!!!)

Very Far North (poetry) Timothy Murphy (metric, v good)

What Narcissism Means to Me (poetry) Tony Hoagland (decent)

The Handmaid's Tale- Margaret Atwood (EXCELLENT)

Eats, Shoots & Leaves- Lynne Truss (funny, punctuation)

Prodigal Summer- Barbara Kingsolver (very good)

The Women of Brewster Place- Gloria Naylor (excellent!)

The Men of Brewster Place- Naylor (excellent!)

Sis-scorpion: Why didn't you like Arabian Days and Nights??????!!? It turned out to be a wonderful tale....what books of Mahfouz you like? I've read most all of 'em i think. 'midaq alley', 'wedding song' along with the 'cairo trilogy' were the coolest.

You listed a few books of poetry, and to be honest, thats just not my thing. Some of your books, however, looked interesting at the time but I confess weren?t bought. What are your thoughts on Prodigal Summer? As for myself, I just bought This blinding absence of light by Tahar Ben Jelloun. I haven?t had a chance to start it yet (it had to be ordered in), but I cant wait as this has been on my to-buy list for ages. Other acquisitions: two books of short stories, Wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west (Gregory Maguire), and A perfect night to go to china (David Gilmore).

Rozaiba- I need to read life of Pi, I've heard great things about it, but still don't have a copy! I'm a big Mahfouz fan, although I detested Arabian Nights and Days and couldn't get past the beginning for some reason.

Rose red- no I've not read that Rice novel, although I've read several of her others (not many of her recent ones, though- they've become more scattered, IMO)

How do you like it so far?

1. Dance to the Music of Time (1st Movement) - Excellent - the narration style is simple yet engrossing.

2. Life of Pi - Great storeyteller that Martel.

3. Amsterdam - Ian McEwan - I did not like this at all.

4. Les Miserables - No need to say anything

5. Ibn-e-Fatouma - Was O.K. Mahfouz has better books.

6. The Unconsoled - KICKACSS initially i thought, 'what a useless writer...' it was only when i realized there is this deliberate intent on the author's part to break the confines of time and space did I find it totally enthralling. It's a book apart.
