Reciting the Quran

I am currently completing a Quran kotham with other members of my family for my late dad.

When I was younger at the madresa, I was taught to recite out aloud. Is this complusory?

I'd be grateful for any answers.

cp, i found a source for you (although there are conflicting views on the net):

'reading the Quran silently is most excellent, for said, "The most excellent among the works of my community is the reading of the Quran silently." '

from www.astrolabe.com

and 'The Prophet saw his three companions in different conditions. When passing by Abu Bakr, he heard him reading silently and asked him about it. He said: He with whom I speak hears it. While passing by Hazrat Omar, he heard him reciting the Quran with loud voice. He asked him about it and he said: I am waking up the heedless and the sleeping men and driving the devil. The Prophet passed by Bilal and found him reading some verses silently and some with sound. On being asked, he said: I am mixing good. verses with good verses. The Prophet said: Each one of you has done well. In other words, he who fears show should read it silently. Open reading awakens the mind and centres the thoughts to one thing. It is better to recite the Quran by seeing it as to look to the Quran is also worship." from www.ghazali.org

also at all the khatams i attended as a kid in pak, reading was done silently (otherwise you would put off the other 60 people in the room)

just saw the original question....

as far as i have seen practiced at kathams...
i had to go to a fair number as a lillun and u don't have to say it aloud....coz most auntys didn't

but they whisper it really loud...and u hear a little buzzing hum in the room...like a distant swarm of bees...

hope that helps

i just wish i could drag my sorry arse from doing what it is doing (usually on the coach watching the telly or in the gym) and pray more often than NOT! -:-

yeah obviously the main prayer has to be in arabic

i am at that weird stage in life where the dua bit is a strange mixture of english and urdu (but since I'm talking to God i know he understands..)

i do niyaat and dua in urdu, coz my mama made me when i was lil....i guess, if i really wanted to i coul change it to english, but the weird thing is that it sounds "right" in urdu now.....does that make sense?

and the main namaaz in arabbic...

but i never heard of someone doing it in english?????

coz what would u do on hajj???

LABS thats interesting...coz its the first i've ever heard....i do my 'full' namaaz in arabic...however the dua at the end i do in my own mother tongue.

oh i didn't know that, i think in pak niyat is taught in urdu .. because it's you talking to God, which you can do any way you want.. ie. in a way which is understood by you..?

even the niyat...as far as i am aware should be done in arabic...the dua can be done in english/mother tongue.

Login to find out (August 8, 2005 at 5:03am)
the niyat at the beginning (which goes 'i am praying 2 rakats of namaz zuhr - sunnat etc.) and the dua at the end can be in any language you choose.. i think..

hold up...im pretty certain namaaz/salaat should be recited in arabic? I've never heard of doing the prayers in english? *: Same applies to reciting the Quran.
