Relativity


Einsteins theory of relativity is fascinating. I am having difficulty understanding the dimension of time. Does anyone have a better way of explaining time? The other issue I have is with the speed of light. The theory states that the speed of light is always the same, regardless of where you measure it from. In other words, the speed of light is the same if you were measuring it from earth and if you were measuring it from high-speeding rocket in the air. How is that possible?

Yes Brian Greens book is very interesting. I haven't read it yet though, however i've seen his video titled "Elegant Universe" which was broadcasted on PBS. Fascinating stuff!

In case you're still trying to figure this out - and admittedly it is rather complex stuff! - I would suggest grabbing a copy of Brian Greene's book, 'The Elegant Universe'. He explains very complex concepts in a very entertaining and totally non-mathematical way! It's actually a book on string theory but the first few chapters run through key concepts in general and special relativity and quantum mechanics.

yes I guess we agree, light is constant, while time is relative.

from what i remember, light does have a constant speed and considering the rocketship scenario, well yeah, obviously if you are on a rocket traveling at the speed of light, then youll be traveling just as fast light itself, therefore, altering time... makes sense :)

no time does not have a constant speed, on the contrary, it is variant depending on the person measuring it. if you are on a rocket traveling the speed of light, the time for you slows down to almost nothing. millions of year can pass on a relative planet like earth while it appears to be only few minutes passed for you.
