Repentance and personality change

In many books and movies we see that a villain, a person of evil character sees the light and changes completely to be a good person. I am sure everything is possible in this world but generally do you think that it is realistic for most people? Are most people capable of such a change? Do people really change so drastically? What are the essential factors that would make it likely for such a change to happen?

Abshaw you have a very good point. Most elections are decided, by the undecided voters; and they're the ones the politicians target.

It is a relative question to begin with, but i am going to make some assumptions to answer this one. One's mental condition never remains the same, he might agree on certian things but at times disagree because some other variables have changed. A person who thinks and accumulates his past experiences for a better future, starts to make a set of principles. Thus everthing that is done has to pass throught those set rules, if it passes, he does one thing, but if it fails, he doesnt do it. On the second hand we have people who dont think (sorry for the lack of words) and dont have set rules for different things, so whatever goes. These are the kind of people who makes most of our masses / public and their minds can be played with, bothered with, messed with. The reaction can be severe; a 180 degree change in attitude or a determination to make their current position permanent.

though the potential is there, sometimes people actually evade such change because, well because change is hard and what ur used to is easier. a change from bad to good is harder because the old saying is true "the right path has many obstacles, whereas the wring path is easy and inviting" (i dont think thats how it goes but u get my point. and i agree with Leena that the essence is never forgotten but it can be manipulated

I beleive anything is possible....but ONLY when the person doing wrong actuly REALIZE that it is bad, accept his/her faults and is willing to give it up(completely). All of this big change always take time. some people think/claim that the moment they want to change , they r changed but...... indepth it always need alot of work on self. One thing i find v imp is that when people around such a person appreciate his/her change( when tested wid time), its definaltey more easy to keep up wid that pace. anyhow, most of the time , time and critisim( both good n bad) prooves to be the true judge of wether that change is actuly there or not.Finely, its never too late to go for the right path( choose good over bad), just make sure u stay wid it too.

sometimes people do change provided something gives them the right stimulus! I knew someone who was a total jerk and has completely changed now after undergoing certain unpleasant experiences in life. However, most evil people remain evil :P

Jean Valjean is the classic example. A priest helps him out and the man who stole money from a 10 year old is changed to a beautiful and caring person. I believe there is good in everyone and we are simply products of our society. The angry young man or hooligan is only that way because of what he has seen and experienced, not because he has a 'gene' for violence or drug addiction.
