Resources?

Salaam
I thought we could use this website to do a few things:
1) Pool resources (anyone who is aware of opportunities that might be of interest to the (budding) group could share.)
2) Share experiences - anyone who has done an international elective/ volunteer work could share their experiences with the rest of us to motivate, inspire, and advise.
3) Find buddies - it would be fun to participate in some of these activities with a friend, if possible. :)

I will, iA, post a list of internet resources that I have found shortly.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

:)

Amina

I went to the rainforest in Panama which was awesome. Pretty exotic I thought, but Africa sounds really cool too. Good luck!

Its somehow through our school, I have no idea how though but I will check on it for you. I do know that there are a couple of faculty who do go so it might have been through them. However I know for sure that International Service learning takes medical students and the Timmy foundation does too, so you might want to try with them.

In terms of resources: last year I went on a medical service trip to Costa Rica and Panama for two weeks. It was through ISL but it was geared more towards first and second year medical students. (We gave vaccines, did eye exams/gave out glasses and did basic checkups. I know of friends who have gone through the Timmy foundation which I've heard is awesome. Also there a few students at my school that do their electives with Doctors without Borders during their fourth year and I've heard its a great experience. I don't know if this helps anyone but if you've got any questions, let me know.

Hum, amazing meant that it gave me an insight into how things are and I was amazed. I never looked at it that way. I dont know how those men would answer that, but it does sound so novel and distant to us, but is so common and so accepted here. In fact, when the doctors are presenting cases to me, a routine part of the history of presenting illness is the number of wives, or for a female, her number.

Aabutt: i'm sensing the maid services aren't the only thing u like there. what's the amazing at the end refer to? so what else have u noted about the society? and even the polygamy? he has 4 homes for 4 wives? i would imagine a guy would never feel truly 'at home' wandering night to night ungrounded. i wonder how these men would answer that?

Ugandan women dress up very smartly and nicely, even if they are very poor. I had noticed that at the time of arrival, but it wasnt till yesterday that I received a good plausable explanation. A friend from here told me that because of the polygamous society, the women really feel a need to keep themselves attractive to their husbands and men, so they would think less of such a venture. Now how far they have succeeded is another story. Actually, this is not just true of Uganda, but other east african countries as well, I have been told. Ahhhhhmazin', I tell ya!!!

Hum, thanks for the correction. rumrum, it is Adeel, with "ee"... Exotic rituals? well, the most exotic ritual that I have gotten used to is a maid who cooks, cleans, does the laundry, buys me fresh mangos, makes up the bed, 'n stuff. It has become quite a topic of discussion among my friends back home. Sigh, soon I will come back in to the real world!!!

AA: there was no error to correct, fair amount vs 25%, no contradiction there, tomato, TomAto :) and hey, call me Hum, H is just too short, It's like AA without the Butt, hey that doesn't sound right, ok nuff jokes there.

For H, I stand corrected about the Muslim population in Uganda. It is about 25%. Many mosques in Kampala. One striking thing in Uganda is the absence of panhandlers/beggars. I havent come across a single one so far.

*blushing now*. Thanks. The pharmaceutical companies generally will not fund trips overseas in this environment, so I wouldnt even try... Malaria has so far stayed away from me. Maybe cuz I bought this circa 1920 wooden carved human figure belonging to Mboke tribe in the Kisangahi province bordering Rwanda/Uganda, which was actually used by the tribe to ward off smallpox,(but seems to working for me for GI and malarial parasites).

Another way of raising funds for such a trip, esp to Africa, is to write a small grant or make a presentation to a local charitable foundation or Rotary, outlining the type of the work you would do for a month or two, and I am sure they will be very happy to support it. Like I was saying about my med student - she made a presentation of her planned trip to Africa to her local Rotary, and they donated enough money on the spot to install a fresh water well. Such presentations can raise $ 3000-5000 in a matter of minutes, and will more than adequately cover your trip costs and then some!
